Hello friends,

I am currently using an FX5200 AGP nVidia card on 4X AGP slot and Intel VC820 board. (Yes, I know its ancient). I am interested to upgrade the card alone. Please suggest a good upgrade path on AGP 4X slot using nVidia cards. My initial research has taken me to 7300GT which I heard is not a very good card. I also came to know that 7800GS-AGP version is available. Is that true? I was planning to buy 6800GT if available in India. The models available are XFX PV-T73K-UAL3 GF7600GS 256 AGP 8X AND PV-T73A-UDF3 GF7600GT
256 AGP 8X. Which one is good or worth the purchase? Is there any other model available?
Please suggest.

Thanks,

Depends on your CPU.. If its a dual core get a HD 3850 AGP, if its single core get a HD 2600XT AGP. Sorry but I dont know of any retailers in India, maybe a few users do :) May want to get a new PSU as well if its weak.

I think there is an AGP 7900GS. that would be worth taking a look at.

They made an AGP 7800GS and that is going to be the best Nivida based AGP card. I would say get a 2600XT AGP.

Hello friends,

thank you all for such a quick response and various suggestions. I checked the price of 7900GS AGP version. It is way too expensive for my budget. I had also checked the features of 2600XT. The features are good. I will check out this card in the local market and get back to you. By the way, you guys may be surprised to know that my processor is a 550 Mhz Pentium III Katmai core with 512 KB Cache (Slot processor). It works fine with NFS series games. Anyway, let me continue my research here for the 2600 and any other nVidia alternatives. thanks again. Will be back....

sorry to poke... but Its 4x AGP & your asking him if its dual core???

the FX5200 is an 8x AGP card if hes got a 4x AGP chances are it wont be AGP 2.0/3.0 compliant, & the OP is more likely to have a XP Athlon/Duron/early - late PIII/early P4 'wiliamette' era system.

on topic...

i think getting a 3850 would be a waste as it will be serverly bottlenecked - even more so since you can only run it at 4x

trying looking for a ATi AGP X800-X1950/HD X2400-HD3650 or if your saving for a bigger system upgrade then try n get a 6800GT - 7600GT or a 7800GT (not sure if they made the 7800GT in AGP) but the 7900GS is also a good choice but it will be really expensive when you find it

good luck

I wonder if it's worth to put any money on this machine.
what is your main use of the computer ? what are the games you'r playing ?

if you can find any good AGP card it will be more expensive then the PCIe equivalent.

agreed. that PC is going to have serious problems running anything that will come close to utilizing a 2600xt. the 6800 would be okay, or you could try for an ATI x800 if they are available. 7900 on that pc is wayy overkill.

Yes, I was infact looking for a 6800GT (AGP) card. Very difficult to find in India. So my plan is to check for a 7800GS or 7600GT. I think it will be ok for my gaming (NFS 6,7,8,9 | Trainz 2004,2006, Flight sim 2004). I am actually saving up for a bigger machine. Quadcore (dual processor) with 4GB and high end video card for the end of next year. Lets see if I can get a good config by then. Do let me know if any other card comes across your mind. I am checking the specs for the X1950/2400. Thanks guys.

the X1950 is a great card. If you are planning on upgrading your processor though, it might be best to hold off on buying a new videocard til you get a PCI-EXpress slot. PCIE cards are a bit cheaper, and generally better overall. honestly, your current CPU is going to bottle neck pretty much any videocard you get and you might be disappointed with the performance gain.
