If I had to pick, it would be the 9800GTX. But wait until HD4870 IMO.

I think alot of you are overlooking something, that's a 3850X2 not 3870X2.

I say the GTX.. the X2 is probably faster in a few games that are well optimized for crossfire.

That 3850x2 when oced matches or exceeds a 3870x2 for added info.Plus has a non stock cooler and is about 50.00 cheaper than a stock heatsink mounted 3870x2

Yes this is a 3850 not 3870. Basically the only difference is lower clocks, but it is still a very fast card. Their performance is nearly the same.

So...
The X2. It uses less power.

They're close, but actually i think the 9800 uses less power.

http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=556&type=expert&pid=13

If you can clock that 3850 to 800+ core i think it'd be a great choice.

Looks to be splitting haird in terms of performance, it basically comes down to whether or not you want to deal with a dual or single gpu setup.

My mistake. Got it mixed with up the 9800GX2. So in that case I reverse my origional conclusion and would go for the GTX.

you do know that 14x9 is lower res than 16x10 right??

i hope you was being ironic.

trt

i would go with the 98 as it will give better fps in most games (bar those with xfire support) as nvidias is buying up the games indusrty support 1 game at a time.

i cant remmeber the last game i bought that didnt have the nvidia logo on it?

but i would not buy any card today tbh, with teh 4xxx next month and the 99xx not long after both of those cards will lose value faster than enron(or northern rock for the uk massive).

i would get a 96gt or 38xx and save the rest to put towards one of those.

There are reviews that say the 3850 crossfire and 9800GTX are VERY close in terms of performance, so I would imagine the 3850 would fair about the same. That being said, I think both cards are overpriced, since a 8800GTS is VERY close in performance to the 9800GTX.

ATI takes the most advantage when playing Oblivion, dunno why. This is why you better get the 9800 GTX instead to average framerates in games.

Why 9800? Get a 8800GTS 512MB: pretty much identical, just the 9800GTX is pricier. And as others have said, newer cards and TRUE 9 series cards are coming.

Agreed with 8800 GTS. 9800 GTX has the same GPU (G92) but the only difference is it clocks higher. You can easily keep up the clocks by overclocking and the 9 series tend to suck for heat which makes it useless for never-ending gamers.

The 8800gts is a great card but some 9800gtx cards can be had as low as 255.00 after a rebate and they do overclock on average a bit higher than the 8800 gts plus the cooler is better . I wonder how well the 3870/3850x2 cards will compete with the 4870 cards.

Wait for the soon to be released 99xx and HD4xxx.

If I absolutely had to buy now, I'd go for the 9800. While both cards offer a similar performance, the 9800 seems to be less power hungry. My latest electricity bill was quite high and I've become more power saving conscious.

By TRUE I meant that a new chip design....Personally I think that the 9800 cards at the moment should have been a 8900 or something like that.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Unless you want maximum performance and blow to your wallet at this very moment in time go for the 9800, but otherwise it's best to stick with a 8800GTS or even a GT there practically the same.

End of the day the choice is yours... :)

well I need a card that will last a while just sold my current card and was thinking of getting the 3850x2 but wonder how it will fair against the new 4000 series in performance and price wise. It depends on the review you read the 3870x2 and 9800 seem to go back and fourth . I think the 3850x2's 512bit interface and 1 gb of ram might make a difference in the future.

I think its 256bit X 2, which is still just 256bit. as for the memory, I think its just two 512MB Frame buffers, which games still see as 512mb. I'm sure someone will correct me if im wrong.

No the 4000 series will pwn all the 3000 series due to the 1 GHz core clock.
