Nvidia 650i normally run hot?

Not sure how hot, but a heck of a lot hotter than my P35, first time dealing with a 650i so I don't really know. Few minutes in the bios and I don't want to keep my hand on the heatsink..

Problem, or should I be looking at a new cooler and maybe a fan?

The only thing that might run hot on 650 boards is the southbridge chip, yet any bare southbridge chip is bound to get a bit warm. A simple low profile passive heat sink will help that out if you're considerably concerned.

What motherboard? Your sig says P5K-E but that is your P35 mobo.

I have a 680i chipset on my P5N32E-SLI and it runs really HOT. I got the optional ASUS fan for the radiator at the end of the NB heatpipe and that helped quite a bit. Then I added an 80mm fan pointed at the actuall heatsink itself (on the 680i chip). Now the heatsink is getting to about 48C (warm but not hot to the touch).

Before that I was getting over 80C on the heatsink

I have the advantage of an IR probe to measure the temps. Using my fingers it went from "ouch that hurts... have to remove my finger" to "mildly warm... could hold my finger there all day".

For metal the "touch" temperature, the temp that you can hold your finger on the surface without your brain telling it to get off... is about 60C for reference sake. Might be different for different people depending on their skin thickness but it is a good rule of thumb... (or rule of finger as the case may be).

I also have a P35 chip on my P5K-E and before I watercooled it, it ran in the 45C range using the optional ASUS fan and no other fans. After watercooling I have no idea how hot it runs since I can't see it with my IR probe anymore and there are no built in temps on the 680i.

this chipset is very hot !(NB around 45°C with stock voltage) it's a big problem when you want OC.
two solutions!

2- change your mobo

Its an MSI P6N-SLI, its the northbridge also that gets so warm, has a decent heatsink on it, but I'm probably going to consider putting a better hsf on it just to help keep it cool.

Now that I doubt considering the amount of praise the 650i gets for overclocking performance.

Yep, my P5N-E has a passively cooled 650i chipset, and the heatsink gets hot enough to burn me if I leave my finger on it more than a few seconds.

Alright just wanted to make sure it wasn't something I had to totally worry about.
It's getting an e6420 and being clocked to 3.2ghz probably, so no big push.
