I currently have a 2 gig ram amd 64 3200 system. running vista 32 bit
here is my GPU specs
• ATI RADEON™ X1600XT Visual processing Unit
• 512MB GDDR3 Memory
• 8x AGP
• 590MHz VPU clock
• 1380MHz memory clock
• 90 nanometer GPU
• Ultra threaded core 3D architecture
• Avivo™ display enhancement technology
• 128-bit memory interface
• 256-bit ring bus memory controller
• Shader model 3.0
• Single Slot solution

where does that rank vs the newer Ati Radeon Hd2400/2600 pci-express cards?

my current card has the 2400 stomped in terms of vpu and memory speed.

though the 2600 512 card has mine beat by 10 mhz in the vpu department but my memory clock speed still blows its doors off.

reason im asking is i want to switch to a new phenom compatible MB which i know will only be Mother boards that also only support pci express. so im trying to figure out if i will take a graphics downgrade going with the 2400. and im not sure how much boost in performance the pci x16 is over my older AGP x8.

best case scenario. i read somewhere my card is somehow pci Express compatible through some external bridge chip? but havent been able to locate that.

They exist, but I doubt it's worth the trouble, also I think that is just to PCI. Could be wrong there too.

As for the cards performance chech the charts over at say Tom's hardware, or better yet find w1zzards chart for GPU's as well.

One thing for sure really between your X16 and the X26 and up is the HD ability!

Here's a little chart, 2600xt pretty far above the 1600xt:http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/desktop-vga-charts/3dmark06-v1-0-2-hdr-sm3-0-score,538.html?p=1590%2C1574%2C1581%2C1583%2C1573%2C1642%2C1578%2C1580%2C1639%2C1576%2C1562%2C1604%2C1607%2C1571%2C1630%2C1569%2C1558%2C1625%2C1606%2C1557%2C1584%2C1563%2C1610%2C1623

^^^That linked incorrectly. You can select the cards you want to see at the bottom.

I'm also assuming those are both pci-e. Pci-e in of itself should give you a solid boost over agp.

not to burst your buble...but your ram speed is divided by 2.........what you posted is the effective clock speed because ddr is double data rate. you actual clock is prob closer to

690mhz

No offense but that chart is garbage. They use outdated drivers for everything.

No I'm aware they're not great. They can be a decent reference point though. I believe the 2600xt does indeed far outperform the 1600xt. Actually, I would recommend the 3650, around the same price as the 2600xt and a generation up.:)

the 2600 kills the 1600xt period..

as to phenom, you could look at the biostar ta780g motherboard i have a friend whos been running a 9850be in one since a week after they came out no problems so far, also the onboard video is likely very close to what you have now (its pretty damn good to be honest) and if not u can alwase buy a cheap 2600 card or something along those lines, honestly i think thats ur best bet :)

heres what i would look at if i where you

the new version of the ta780g with heatpipe cooling(kickass board)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138114

ram, well 2 kits i will list

2x1gb patriot extream
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220174

2x2gb wintec ampx ddr2 800(kit i have, will do 1180 at 2.27volts)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820161183

depending on what u got to spend :)

as to the rest of the parts, well depends on what u need, sata hdd's are preferable these days as all boards only have 1 ide port(2 device limmit)

yea .

to bad sata drives are slower than IDE...... ohwell solid state HD will be mainstream soon. and finally computers wont be bottlenecked by ancient hard drive technology that has not changed sense its inception :p

I second the 780g chipset it's awesome for the price and it seems to be the best chipset to overclock the 9850 on.

@the op, no ide drives are not faster than sata it's not even close. sats drives ar much much faster than their ide counterparts.

The 2600xt is about on par with a x1800 series card in terms of performance just for reference. Everyone takes a performance hit in Vista, no matter who you are, usually it's under 5FPS :)
