how to remove the cooler off HD4850 ?

i have this visiontek HD4850, how should i remove the cooler off ?

should i take all the screws out, including the backplate ?

although I don't have a 4850, ATI doesn't change their reference mounting designs too much;

if ATI hasn't changed the design much (which they usually don't), unplug the fan, then you remove the screws which will remove the backing plate, and the cooler itself will come off - a lot of times, though, the sticky pads used on the DRAM modules doesn't like to come free nice and easy. I'll use and old credit card or some other plastic card and slide it carefully between the pad and the MEM module, being careful not to completely destroy the pad.

You do need to remove all the screws, then just wiggle it around some, should come off easily, already done that to put some MX-2 on mine.

First temp I saw when I used the card after buying it was 69c, first time I booted the card after applying the MX-2 was 61c.

I just let CCC overclock my card, max temp I saw was 86c, ambient in my room I have no idea, but going to guess about 70f max (out side is low 60f and I have some windows open and fans going to keep it cooler).

Can you people who currently have HD4850s say about the max temp at stock after about half hour in rithdrbl?

I have a Sapphire HD4850 on the way and I just want to know the expectations from people who actually own the cards than from a review.

A couple of reviews have said 85-87degC Max load.

Doing a 30 mins stability test with Fur Benchmark, 1680x1050 8xMSAA, starting temp was 56c.

Ok, after over 10 mins of running the test (800+ seconds, I'm too lazy to convert that to mins) the max temp I saw was 88c, but it jumped between 86-88c, ambient I am going to guess is in the low 60f range.

I rember an extra retaining screw near the rear of the card (by the exhaust) on my 3870s.

Not sure if it's the same with your card, but you might want to take a peek IF you are having trouble with the HS releasing...

That is hot.
Hottest running card I know of.
Hopefully the threshold of thecore is a fair bit higher.

I see your'e planning in getting two.
There's goingto be some serious heat in your case.

All you need is a sledgehammer and a chizel.

Not sure if it's the same with your card, but you might want to take a peek IF you are having trouble with the HS releasing...

There are a total of 12, 8 for the heatsink covering the entire card and 4 for the backplate, screws on the back of a Visiontek card, all need to be removed for the heatsink to come off.

guys, check your fan speeds to make sure the fans are running at 100%, on the 3870's i think, the fans were at like 25%...

The Asus card just came today. I really don't feel like doing anything to it since the VT was such a pain in the ass. The HS was literally glued to the gpu It took nearly 2 hrs to wiggle the darn thing off. They desperately need to design a better single slot for that thing. The cooler for the single slot Saphhire 3870 will easily handle it. I don't have time for it anyway, today has already been too damn busy & its not even noon yet :shadedshu

Sorry for the n00b question but I'm still pretty new to ATI, will the IceQ 3 cooler from my HIS 3870 swap right over to a 4850 without modification or will an aftermarket cooler be needed?

My VisionTek got to 88c and the fan to 46% under load.If you want a temp fix until you get a better cooler or they come out with a BIOS fix or get the utilities upgraded to work with the 4850's.You can disconnect the fan header and carefully lift the little tab slightly on the blue wire and pull out the blue wire,the fan will run at 100% when reconnected.I did it to mine and my load temps dropped to around 70c load.Only draw back is it's loud.
