dissapointing... the 4870 itself was suppossed to be near or better the 280 but now its just the Xfired 4870's will beat a single 280..............

Yep. It's SO disappointing that it trails behind fairly little and costs 350 dollars less... So VERY disappointing that this performance is at the same cost as one of Nvidia's cards... I am just so sad that someone made a midrange card and it only barely lost to someone else's high end. T_T /sarcasm

Look at reviews. Turn up the AA, and 4870 is in the lead! Oh, and you CAN add a fourth card... and still build the entire system for less than the cost of 3x GTX 280's. :)

What happens then? The fourth card means nothing to you? Nope. I can't afford it. Rather buy 3 GTX 280s and save money. /more sarcasm

I like this improvement. Look at the numbers. It's like... a 120% improvement over the 3870. It's like a 3870x2 overclocked to hell that has perfect scaling.

Sorry if I sounded like an ass.

AMD's VP of Marketing confirms the upcoming R700 based graphics card called HD 4870 x2 will beat Nvidia's GTX280.
R700 is faster than GTX 280
AMD VP of Marketing confirms
http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8115&Itemid=65
We had a chance to meet and talk with the Vice President of ATI's Graphics Marketing, Matt Skynner, and the Vice President of GPU Sales, John Byrne, and the marketing chap has confirmed that ATI is very confident that its upcoming dual chip R700 will beat Geforce 280 GTX performance.

According to internal data that ATI gathered, its R700 dual RV770 card will end up faster than the fastest Geforce GTX 280 card. This is quite a positive surprise and it definitely shows that ATI is back on track.

Nvidia has a lot of reasons to worry, as ATI’s RV770-based cards look good and there is a big chance that Nvidia will be dethroned by ATI’s new dual chip R700 offering. At the same time we believe that Nvidia can get its card a bit faster and change the game to its advantage as Nvidia desperately needs the performance crown. The big question is how much performance GDDR5 could add to GT200 design.

The dual RV770-based R700 card is supposed to launch in August time, rather late than early, and the hardware is ready; it is now all up to the drivers.

Seeing how 2 4870's perform in crossfire, i don't see that as very suprising, they beat the the GTX280 in most of the benches

according to the anandtech and techreport reviews... the single 4870 is between the 260 and 280, sometimes beating the 280, so im sure the crossfire 4870's will be in a league of their own.

Well it’s still much cheaper to buy 2 x HD 3870's for crossfire vs. buying only one HD 3870 x2. The same goes for the faster HD 4850's. $189 is not a bad price at all especially when you consider it slaughters the HD 3870 by far and beats the HD 3870 x2 in almost 90% of all benchmarks.

looking at the scores its obvious the crossfire drivers arent doing the job at the moment lol i think things will get better in time it took a while for the first lot of xfire drivers to come out for the 38xx series.

I'm more impressed that 8.6 didn't make the cards look like garbage. If it can make the 3870x2 5-10% faster over 8.5 then it has to be worth something.

How does this put them 'back on track?' The 3870X2 was faster than the 9800 GTX. The GTX 280 is now the top dog GTX and so the 4870x2 being faster doesn't say anything new...

What put ATi back on track was their increase in overall performance across all products.

I'm really surprised that dude at ATi even commented. I thought they were trying to appeal to mass consumers, not high end niche.

Interesting.

Good point. If you take the performance of the HD 3850 vs. the next Gen HD 4850, the 4850 % wise kills the 3850 by a very large margin. This is great news.

Who really cares which manufacturer is faster or slower? Most of us buy the faster providing it's sensible "bang for buck"....who really cares who holds the crown at a partcular time as it's the card we should be concerned about, not the name on it (IMO)....apart of course from Fanboi's who will never admit their card is inferior and therefore buy the inferior performing product, often at higher prices and then try to convince me it's faster/better...........My preference is for NVidia (only because it has given me what I wanted over the last 3 years at the time I wanted it) but I ALWAYS buy in the mid/upper segment based on bang for buck and I wont be tied to either, personally I am delighted that ATI will compete because it gives me more choice, fanboi's are also happy because it gives them more to complain about :rockout:

Well if also depends on your motherboard and whether you will do Crossfire or SLI. I prefer Crossfire enabled motherboards so I buy ATI. And this time around, I am very pleased with the new Radeon HD 4800 series. NVIDIA will have a hard time competing in Price/Performance.

The HD 4870 x2 is already finished and working. It already beats the GTX 280, but what AMD said is they are tweaking the drivers for the card to make sure they are perfect. The HD 4870 x2 is a complicated design and so it will take a little longer to get released. Hopefully by early August we will see them.

That´s not really acurate. if 2 cards are in par with one that one is allways ahead. Why? Because she doesnt have low FPS like the sli/crossfire. The difference is minimal id say and in my book the ony sistem that can trash 280 is 2 4870 in crossfire. But we have to wait a little bit. Or wait for the 4870x2

The difference between a single GTX280 and CF HD4850 according to the reviews I have seen (firingsquad have done a comprehensive review including CF) is anything but minimal.

Looks to me buying 2 x HD 4850's for Crossfire is a much better buy than the much much more $ expensive $ GeForce GTX 280.

My main consern was the card has to support DirectX 10.1 - And the only cards that support it is by ATI. DIABLO 3 is based on DX10.1, if your card is missing this support, you will miss out on graphical features as per BLIZZARD!!!!!

The way I see it is the HD 4870 is what the 9700 Pro was for ATI back in the day. If ATI gains anything similar right now to what they've gained with the 9700 Pro, Nvidia will lose the crown.

But anyway, competition is great, if you have SLI, buy Nvidia, if you have CF, buy ATI.

One more thing, we are to expect a 20% to 40% performance increase for all HD 4800 series cards once ATI releases its official drivers. Not sure if it will be the first drivers that will be available on the website or the 2nd driver release?

This is to affect several games along with a few older titles like Half-Life 2, DOOM 3 & Quake 4 etc.
But I am not sure about further Crossfire performance increases.
