Nvidia is helping Regen with the Ati PhysX Drivers

Nvidia is helping us with the project and it seems they gave us their blessings. It’s very impressing, inspiring and motivating to see Nvidia's view on this. Why they help us? My best guess would be: They probably want to take on Intel with CUDA and to deal with the latest Havok threat from both AMD and Intel.

ATI has gotta be pissed at this, NGOHQ is saying that Nvidia is helping them with the drivers now.

That makes just about as much sense as the GTX200 series itself. Although, I think ATi would welcome the idea rather be pissed at it...ATi is already beating the shit out of them where it hurts. If NV wants to better ATi's cards then all the more power to them. Other than that, I think its pure BS

I guess from NVIDIA's standpoint, it makes sense to get CUDA out there. The last thing NVIDIA needs is another failure after the GTX 200 series and the faulty mobile GPUs.

I still won't believe any bit of this is true until I see the results myself.

Meh, when they needed AMD (or ATI)'s support the most (in supplying a sample), they backed off because it would spark off a new battle between NV and ATI in the courts (at least I bet ATI thought this way), now, feeling pseudo-backstabbed, NGOHQ does an arse-kissing act with this since they have very clearly developed a vendetta against AMD. Though it's sugar-coated with "to make CUDA counter Intel", that's premium quality BS...it's like pissing in a lake to fill it up, CUDA can't compete with Intel in terms of a full-on processing architecture, it won't happen. So all I see is that this arse-kiss is more to show "we wanted to help them, they didn't listen to geniuses like us, now NV wants to help us"....so they could give NV the higher ground over ATI and highlight ATI's incompetence in taking up a "challenge" in their views.

Ditto on that, I am really surprised that ATI hasn't done more recently to get a PPU compatible with their cards.

I personally think CUDA and NVIDIA PhysX owes all its popularity to the fact that PhysX affects 3DMark scores, not that it makes games look "ZOMG Betrrrrrrr!!!!111!1" than Havoc driven games. Doesn't deserve so much popularity. If it wasn't for 3DMark scores, who gave two hoots to PhysX? It's been around for a while now? Say 2 years?

Your ATI + PhysX scores won't be accepted by Futuremark in its ORB anyway, since it's an unauthorised driver in use (unauthorised in FM's view)? Of course, you can compare your score using screenshots with your forum friends but participate in bench competition (where validation is all that counts)?

It's all for the purpose of personallly getting the information to compare, plus if it actually can be implemented in more than a handful of games, that would be nice too. It's just something else to play with.

Oh and:
I could see Nvidia helping them out because they want AMD/ATI to adopt CUDA, or at least have their [AMD/ATI's] customers have that option. It would be a big step towards success in making CUDA a viable and common platform because AMD is the second largest supplier of x86 CPU's, and dedicated graphics cards in the world.

ati will be reciving cuda support in their drivers, as cuda is just a software based component that allows programs to directly communicate with the gpu core and have it process data... the reason, as bta said, for this is, so that cuda, can stand up to intel's havoc physics (far superior).... as while nvidia and amd are huge rivals, and are super competitive, amd and nvidia have a bigger enemy, intel. to counter intels threat in the physics battleground, they are working together on cuda.. but will fail if intel can get their shit together with laraabe.

I disagree... if CUDA is open source (and since the compiler is based on open 64 i assume it is) ATI would be wise to embrace it. It represents a change in computing as a whole. And while its not as evolved as x86, it still has much more potential in terms of raw computational power. We have seen this with the "supercomputer tomography" example (the 4 9800GX2's running as computational untis).

Two foes will always join forces when faced with a common threat. Nvidia and ATI/AMD combined would wipe the floor with Intel - and whether or not GPGPU or CUDA becomes the industry standard MAY be irrelevant. Thats my 2 cents... take with a bucket of salt.

No, CUDA is not open-source, the compiler NVIDIA gives you as part of the SDK is based on Open64. CUDA is proprietary, though freely available for use within NVIDIA's terms and conditions, don't confuse it with open-source, the compliler they give is based on something that's open-source, that alone doesn't build up an SDK? The countless headers, binaries part of the SDK are proprietary though free. If you still think it's open source, link me to the source-code of those components.

I agree on that one. But back whne 9800xt was out, ATi's drivers were good back then. What happened?

The drivers would fail passed a certain OC on my 3850 back in the day.

The same OC with another driver(third party) did fine with the OC.

Nvidia's pricing right now, is its only problem in my eyes.

When I saw the pricing on the GTX 280, I was like...... I could do alot with that kind of money.

There are millions ways to support: officially, confidential, unofficially (OEM Partners) and even off the radar without getting into trouble (they can’t anyway). Sadly, the fact they didn’t picked any way shows how much they care.
