Hey guys...

Today I've had a major issue with my 2900XT. Basically I turned on my PC on stock clocks ( see my system specs ) and I noticed some artifacts on my screen during the post screen. It was working fine until it got to the bit where you have to sign in on Vista. Basically there are tonnes of artifacts all over the screen and to be honest I would of thought this was a overheating issue but it's not. The reason I know it's not is because it works fine in Safemode not a single artifact. So then I uninstalled the drivers for my card rebooted, worked fine. But now of course I can't play any demanding games above minesweeper -.-. Every time I install the ATi drivers for my PC ( Yes they are the correct ones Vista 86x ) it works fine until it tells me I need to restart and once it loads into Vista and gets to the login screen, we're back to square one.

If you guys need more info or what ever please post here I need help ASAP as this is affecting my schoolwork.

Also I'll post a video of what happens.

Did you switch from a different card? Trying new drivers? Is this just something that started happening for no reason?

You could try system restore, that's got me out of a lot of sticky situations.

Looks like your card is going bad. Try taking the cooler off, and replace the thermal paste. Also, you may want to try older drivers if your are using new ones.

If I take off the cooler wouldn't it void my warranty? I would prefer not to do that in case I can RMA it.

Anyway I'm uploading a few videos + a picture of the Post screen.

This image went a bit fucked up: [http://www.team-oc.com/WTFOMGFFS/DSCF1527.JPG It shows the artifacts but I was in a rush to take the pic and it made a kinda weird effect... which looks cool except it's a bad time to look cool...

Damn guys I'm getting worried now =[.

Ok more videos uploaded, sorry I can't tell you which one is which as WMP won't load in Safe mode.

Please help guys =[.

Edit:

Rolled back to 8.5 no luck, then 8.4 no luck. This is seeming like it's nothing to do with drivers anymore =[.

This only happens on stock clocks, or it started when you reverted and won't go away?
Did you bring down the voltage?

I have not touched the voltage for my GPU.

Try removing and re inserting the card.

Try the other PCI-e slot too.

I've tried re inserting and yet no luck.
I also swapped it to the other slot and it's even worse!

I havn't got another PC with a PCI-E slot =/. Although I'm gonna pop up today and get my self a cheap PCI-E Graphics card and see if it works, if it doesn't work then obviously it has to be the motherboard? Right?

Looks like bad video memory. Could be the DVI cable or noise on your AC line. I would switch out with another PCI-e card and if that works then see if you can RMA the 2900.

Yeah I'll try that. Just got to wait a few bloody hours before the shop opens -.-
Anyway if it's not the graphics card what would be the next step?

its unlikely, but possible its the PSU power to the video card. the advanced features of the chip wont turn on without the drivers, so the problem may not appear until they are installed.

seriously, i love that argument. its some weird logic i've never understood...

when things break... they do tend to work just fine until the moment they broke.
that is the definition of something breaking.

Yeah my Dad says things don't break for no reason and then he would make me go into detail about it... even if I don't know wtf I am talking about. So if my GPU is screwed he's gonna say "Why did it break"?, "Things don't break for no reason..." and then he is gonna expect me to know what caused to to break!

Anyway just a few more hours till I can get a "test" PCI-E card.

they certainly do break for a reason. the thing is, GPU's are made of millions of parts (transistors) and it only takes one faulty one for it to go downhill.

a bad PSU, overheating, a power surge, dust in the wrong spot... theres so many reasons for a video card to fail.

Update!

I bought an HD3450 which is utter crap but anyhow it works fine, not a single artifact.
So it seems like my 2900XT was dieing. As of now I'll pronounce him dead.

GPU Died: 5th July 2008, 10:38AM

Soooo any suggestions for a top notch ATi card?
Also if possible suggestion for a new PCI-E 2.0 mobo as the one I'm on is 1.0a so yeah.

Thanks in advanced guys and thanks for helping me find the problem!
