Hello all,

I'll be building a new computer in a couple of weeks and I was told that some games wont run due to me having a 'Quad'. Is this true ?

The only games i'll be playing to begin with is:

HL2: Deathmatch / Main Story
TDU (Test drive unlimited)
Crysis

Thanks in advance,

Wasley

No, they will run just fine. They simply won't utilize the extra cores. There aren't many games that do. Though when doing heavy multitasking or running any application that does utilize it it's a hge difference.

The thing is this. A quad won't be used by computer games. There isn't a game out there that will use all 4 cores. If your going to just be doing games, its better to spend your money on a E84 or 8500. They will be able to oc to 4ghz and be plenty for you in gaming. Now, if your doing multi tasks like art, web, and things that take up CPU recourses like that, then its better to grab a quad.
But, For most things, A Quad is just a "Future-proof" type of things... As for your friend. You just need to smack him with your keyboard! lol

Very tempting.

I do both gaming, web development, photoshop, video editing, DJ'ing. I think i'll be better off with the Quad. And it will pay of in the long run :)

Yeah, you'll be doing more multi-tasking types of things.. A quad is probably your best bet... Now, is it going to be a Q66/67 or going 45nm with the Q9450?

There are games that utilize them, just not many. Claiming that there are none is wrong. In fact, the best example is Supreme Commander, which actually runs a lot better on quads.

I agree that if you're using your PC as console a fast clocked dual core is not a bad idea.

Yeah, I know of it being better to have quad in some games. But, I forget about games like that since I really don't play much computer based games. Really, I don't play much of anything. Just maybe a round or two of Unreal to get my fustration out. But, I do thank you for the example and so forth

supreme commander really only uses 3, after that the benefit is negligible.

Because you do video editing, YES you REALLY want a quad. it WILL make a huge difference there.

Q6600 are a good chip, as are teh alternatives (Q9450 for example) - whats the maximum FSB your motherboard supports? Do you intend to overclock?

Supreme commander has 4 main threads and several other small threads. Though the gains from three to four cores isn't that relevant as the question was about a quad specifically. In the example the quad performs a lot better than a dual.

Its not 'a lot' its 'noticeable' - clock vs. clock, you only gain +1 to +2 in sim speed, and thats negatable by buying a faster clocked dual core. I'm not making it up. supreme commander DOES benefit from a quad - but its nothing massive.

It doesnt matter anyway, as the OP does many tasks beyond gaming. His fear was that some games wouldnt even start on a quad, but they do work just fine.

My system usually runs at 2.4GHz, EVERY system that was faster than me in Supreme Commander was a faster clocked quad. Never a dual core.
However, I vote for playing a game with your dual core. Some 4v4 Setons. N00b x2 game without 20min no rush so we can be sure the game will run crappy.

That was answered yes, and I agree that for his use a quad won't hurt.

i actually have two Q6600's... i dont have a dual core. I lan the game every weekend, and tend to play it daily with friends online. The advantage of a kentsfield vs a conroe is around +2 in sim speed (its double cores + double cache, and they're easy to get at the same clocks when i tested it)

i've seen a system gain +3 going from 2T to 1T ram, so imo ram is overlooked a lot - of these 'slower' dual core systems, how many had slower ram than you? (you have some... fancy ram setups, i have no idea how your ram compares to normal systems)

to the OP: i'm sorry this has gone off topic.

q6600 is the best buy in the U.S. its under 200$ and it can easily overclock to 3ghz and up to the 3.6ghz area.

Sure not every game will use it, but while your game uses maybe 2 of the cores as many games are dual core now, that leaves all the stuff in the background to use the other 2 so it wont steal the power from your game. I leave stuff running in the background all the time now while gaming and it has no ill effects. Then your left more future ready for when more games use quads, and trust me they wil since dual core is catching on so fast and in a year 8 core cpu's will be out making 4 core the new "standard"

Probably none, FB-DIMMs don't really outperform anything. Though +2 is a lot in a 4v4, if you play as often as you say you must know that.

Another game that can take advantage of a Quad, so it seems, is Warmonger. I saw this on Onry's 6000 X2 and puke!! Stuttered really bad but when we was testing my Phenom out @ stock and other speeds much, much better.

It must be a nightmare to program any game to use more than 2 core and probably more time consuming so more expensive for them. I guess the dual core games will continue for a good while.

this is true. most games in the near and somewhat distant future will never utilize a quad. its just very time consuming and expensive and...unnecessary to develop

a quad will work as well as any dual for gaming so long as two of its cores are substantial enough. the q6600 being essentially two glued together e6600's will perform similar to that chip for most games. nothing more..nothing less. and thats pretty good

but quads weren't developed or brought to mainstream market with games and gamers in mind. they were brought to market for working professionals in graphic design, film, recording arts, photography, and the sciences. time is money in those fields.....and quads save a lot of time with programs designed to take advantage

its nice us home users and gamers can have them....but games are becoming more gpu bound then ever...and developers know 30fps is a beginning standard for games to run smoothly....and 60 is outstanding. you don't need 4 or 8 cores to achieve this

so why would they go to the trouble of developing games for four cores? oh sure some have...but i guarantee you can run those games just as well with a dual...all other things being equal

the only time we will see games developed for four cores in mass is if quads are ever the standard across the board, period. as in every single computer you can buy at Walmart will have a quad core of some kind. can it happen? sure....but its awhile off

and even if that time comes, nothing will be "future proof" about todays quads by then. hardware will have changed, chips, RAM, OS''s, everything. todays quads will be like yesterdays P4's by then

people will be throwing them out with the bath water :(

if you do all that extra stuff like TS, yeah i'd go for a quad. if not i'll take the raw all out oomph of a more powerful dual core any day
