What do you pick - E21xx OR E7200 OR Others, and what RAM?

I'm a budget overclocker. I'm also a price/performance geek.
My current pick is E21xx which is very cheap and can overclock to 3.0Ghz easily with stock cooler. I'm also interested in the new E7200 but it's 100% expensive at my local stores (I don't buy online!).
My choice of the coming motherboard is Foxconn P35A-S.

1. What's the difference between E21xx and E7200?
As far as I know, the only differences are cache size and clock multiplier. Anything else?

2. Normally speaking, how far can E7200 go on stock cooling? How good is the overclockabilty of E7200?
I plan to use its stock cooler only. I don't plan to spend extra bucks on aftermarket coolers unless it's proved to be worth it, price/performance-wise.

3. How much RAM should I get? My choices:
3GB: 1GB + 1GB + 1GB
3GB: 2GB + 1GB
4GB: 2GB + 2GB
Does it hurt if I mix different RAM brand, or different size/timings of RAM?

I'm using Windows XP Pro.
I need to receive a lot of streaming data (10+). I may do occasional video & audio editing/recording. I don't often play games.

DDR2 should be obsolete in 1-2 years. I believe I have to dump DDR2 when I upgrade after 3 years or so. So I don't think it's worth buying too much RAM even it's cheap.

Dual channel shouldn't be a concern. Memory seems not to be the bottleneck. Hardly any application needs so much bandwidth.

What do you think?

1) The cores are different, the 21xx is allendale (65nm), the 7200 is wolfdale (45nm), and far superior.
2) 4ghz usually. Over that for some.
3) 4gb 2x2gb if your on vista and play a lot of games and encode a lot and stuff. 2x1gb if your just going for pure oc. It depends as for mixing. I would avoid it if possible.

e7200 is way, way better than the allendales. Just dropped the prices too.

Cache makes a HUGE difference in that case. Superior cooling = better overclock nearly always. Dual channel = better i.e. 2x2 gb or 2x1 gb

Yea, go for at least the e7200. I think the e8400 just got a price cut as well, and that's an even bigger upgrade over the e7200. It's worth checking out.

What are the advantages of wolfdale (45nm) over allendale (65nm)?
EDIT: Actually E2xxx is using Conroe core (65nm).

2) 4ghz usually. Over that for some.
Even with stock coolers? :twitch:

My main concern is how far ca it go if I use stock coolers only.

I don't plan to use aftermarket coolers because (1) it seems to be against my purpose (making a good performance/price build) (2) I don't know much about aftermarket coolers.

It depends as for mixing. I would avoid it if possible.
Apart from dual-channel, what problems do I face if I mix and match different RAMs (in size/timings/brand)?

How much is it now?

Cooler, less voltages, more cache, faster clock for clock (3ghz wolfie> 3ghz ally), and better oc's.

Well it could w/ stock cooler probably, but I wouldn't, the temps would be a little high. You can get a great hs for $30 that will oc and keep temps low, like this or this. If your really opposed to getting aftermarket, I'd say 3.5 or so would be pretty attainable on stock. Either way, the wolfdale will be cooler as it uses less voltages to get to it's speeds. You'll need high voltages to get the ally's to those speeds.

Well, sometimes compatibility can become a problem. Then oc'ing. I think dual-channel should work fine even w/ mix, but oc'ing mixed ram w/ different timings is trouble.

How much is it now?

$125 in the US.

Sounds great. :D

BTW E21** uses little power at stock (this is one of the reasons I may want it). It seems to use slightly less power than E7200 altho it's 65nm. But I don't know how much power consumption it will be when overclocked.

E7200 attracts me too. Budget and low power too.

What's the safe voltage for E7200 (45nm-based CPU)?

Well it's okay with aftermarket coolers if it's worth it price/performance-wise. I don't think about it because I know little about aftermarket coolers. But AFAIK I need to buy at least US$20-30 coolers for about 200mhz or less gain. This is bad price/performance-wise.

Is it possible to buy cheap coolers (eg ~US$10) and how much does it help?

It's easy to get the same speed. I may not be able to match all 4 timings (?-?-?-?) if I mix different sizes.
Does different voltage matter (eg 1.8v RAM and 2.2v RAM)?

One question:
Is single or double-sided RAM still a concern in today's world? If so, how can I know if it's single/double-sided and which one should I get?

I have run my e7200 at 3.8G for months. 1.33v, never exceeds 55c on air. I am using a golden orb II. That HS&F isnt the best and my cpu stays cool.

Most RAM is double-sided these days and for comparison with the stock cooler at stock settings my q66 runs at 40 odd degrees idle while with my aftermarket cooler it runs at 3.8ghz about 30 and 35 load.

+1 for the E7200... good performer ,ive got mine on a moderate oc of 3.2ghz with voltage slightly above stock.

having had both the E2160 and the E7200 in my 2nd PC in the last few months I have to say the E7200 is without doubt the better performer.

Wow, old thread. Anyway, the E5200 is probably the best buy for anyone that is looking. mine does 4.0GHZ@ 1.55V, which oddly enough runs much cooler than the other 45NM quads, barely breaking 64*C.
