The Card is the new revision of the 8800gs...

What are you trying to do with the card? just game, videos, or what?

a 9600gso is the exact same thing as the 8800gs with a different sticker.

in order of performance best to worst:

8800gts 512
8800gt
9600gso / 8800gs

The GSo won't be a great 06 bencher... You might be able to get good scores in your cat... but to hold up anywhere else it's really not the best.. It's a good budget card plain and simple... But, in any budget since, I'd still say grab the 8800gt, or 9600gt...

If he mods and OC's a 9600GSO like DOM did, he'd have a 9600GT killer tho...DOM's GT at the same OC's I had on my 9600GT (850/1950 1100), the GSO pulled away by a healthy margin. The GSO's when overclocked have those extra shaders that definately help boost performance...the GT is a great card, I love my 9600GT still..but OC'd GS's and GSO's come neck and neck and can even pull away from the GT's just due to the extra shader power. But that's something to think about too..if you're not an overclocker, or like to play it safe the 9600GT is faster out of the chute...but things can be evened up or even changed very quickly!

A friend of mine bought a evga 8800gs sc which basicly same gpu as the one you mention. With an AMD 4200+ and 2GB of ADATA extreme DDR2 800+ and a ECS Black edition motherboard. he did a little over clocking on the CPU and in 3dmark06 got 88++ somthing. I bet it can reach 9,000+ by overclocking the GPU and CPU a bit further.

so hold out for the 9600GT/GTS huh? Damn, and the GSO is so cheap too. :(

the 8800GS/9600GSO are great cards, my XFX one that I had would oc to 720/1900/1800 easily, and from what else ive gathered at those speeds it nukes the 9600GT and to be honest as long as your res is 1680x1050 or lower the ram count wont matter alot nor the 192bit bus, as it is sufficent for even Crysis, which i palyed @ High on my 8800GS

gaming and a high 3dmark06 score. I'm currently on an AMD A64 X2 Dual-Core 5600+ (3.1GHz)
i got the same set up as you, basically (stock 2.8 proc however)

with an overclocked card i got 10886 on 3DMark. don't know if that is "good" but thats what i got

the card itself is fine. i upgraded to a 22in monitor two or three weeks ago and it does ok with 1680X1050 with most games i play

COD4, Stalker, Call Of Juarez (a bit of a dog even at my old 1440X900) COD2, FEAR, Bioshock...all work well at 1680X1050

Crysis...eh...now i use Cubans Mod level 3 with the ToD add on. i used to run it on high except for textures and post processing. and Grid i've had to run below native res at 1440X900 if i want to keep the AA and "max settings." other then those two i'm good to go as before

however it really is a card best optimized for 1440X900 or below. its doing surprisingly well at the higher res....but if i were buying today i'd go for the 9600GT or 8800GT for my new monitor. if looking for a value card...

but the 8800GS is the same as the 9600GSO and you can get one for $79 after rebate from newegg. i will say this: for $79 if you game at 1440X900....the value cannot be beat

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130332

just give it a nice overclock to the "Superclock" level

yeah! Has a lot of textures, the whole entire world is mapped out basically. The new Acceleration pack allows DirectX 10 which is really nice on the water.

FS:X did something that up to that point hadn't happened it was the first MS Flight Sim that actully needed a Video Card that is newer than 6yrs old. FS2004 will run on a 32mb TNT2

My 8800GS, which is the same graphics card, scores 11,000 in 3Dmark06 at its max overclock and I could play FS:X @ 1680x1050, but I had to turn a few settings down.

Even at the max overclocks I could get on the card(725/1750/2000 core/shader/mem), it wouldn't match a stock 8800GT.
