Games Convention 08: No to Nvidia and ATI

Crytek is doing its own physics. They have their own engine for physics in their Cry engine 2 and we can tell that physics looks good.

When we asked the guys about Nvidia's and Havok's physics we were told that for the time being they don't need them or want them. You can destroy just about anything in Crysis from trees to vehicles with very realistic movement of their own, and gunshot physics are impressive too. Crytek usually does all physics on the CPU but it might do some things on a GPU.

In the future Crytek might consider going after Nvidia's approach and physics but only if it makes sense. Currently they are happy with their
own physics and when they sell their engine, they sell it with their own physics. The good thing is that the customer can further adjust the
physics for its needs.

We've seen Cry engine 2 physics in action and the company can create a quite impressive nuclear blast that will look quite realistic but naturally not every particle in the cloud interacts with each other.

What was bad about Crysis's physics?...I found them very impressive, better than any shit Ageia-based game.

They are pretty buggy at times but otherwise they are really good. Its just when alot of pressure is put on something it usually flies to the other side of the map :laugh:

They seem to be really good, but a tad overly floppy. I don't know how many corpses I have seen flop around a bit too much after death. Impressive that they do them themselves though with everyone else jumping on the Havok train.

Sure, barrels 'n' boxes can be tossed around. That's about what covers "physics" in Crysis. Everything else is just sad...

crysis (and many other games) have a very LINEAR physics. As an example a force that should shatter a metal barrel throws it across the map with deadly force instead. to have true physics, you cant have items that are immune to it! tents need to get holes in em, vehicles flip, etc.

Crytek does a good job of "live", "on CPU" physics. It's a step forward. Let's see Far Cry 2 before we pass final judgement on Crytek physics.

I'm sure they would have liked to do more. But remember, when they designed their engine, GPU physics was not an option, and PPU physics was a very limited Ageia market. So they did good based on the contraints they faced.

I'm sure that now we are ALL on quad cores ;-) (or will be in the next year with Dual core plus HT), then they can advance their physics engine one step further, without having to employ GPU licensed (and limited) routines.

crysis did have some really bad physics in my opinion, one time I jumped into the water and the guy died and went to the bottom in under a second

LOL, the physics in Crysis is fucked up. When you pick up a frog and throw it towards the sky, it just keeps going and doesn't land. It's like you're on the moon or something, WTF?

as i explained it to a friend, physics doesnt work if some items ignore it (such as walls with infinite strength/no physics capabilities) - someone throws a chair at a window, the force gets transferred even if the window doesnt break and the chair falls back down. it doesnt go ZOOOOOOOOOM off into the sunset like a freaking UFO.
