Hey guys I'm looking to build a solid gaming machine, and I'm wondering what parts I should focus on and what parts are not necessary.

Is a quad core processor really necessary?

How about the power supply? 1,000 watts needed?

My last question is about DDR3 memory. Do I really need that?

I'm also trying to set my rig up to last me a decent period of time. If I want to upgrade in the future what should I have in place presently?

I'm sorry I'm so newb.

thanks,
Chris

Quad is only necessary if you want to future proof yourself, you can build a very nice gaming rig using a dual core, but for best performance and future proof I would go with a Quad. They seem to be becoming the new standard. 1000w psu is prob not necessary just get a good high quality brand PC Power and Cooling is highly recommended, A member on here was able to run 2 4870 X2's and a 8800gts off one of their 860w PSUs. and again ddr3 is more of a future proofing decision than a necessity. Hope this helps you out some, if you have any other questions please ask and welcome to TPU!

Excellent questions! I have to start off by saying that no rig is "futureproof", as there will always be something newer and faster just around the corner. That being said, if my mind is set on buying a new rig, why wait? A quad-core isn't necessary at all with games especially considering many of Intels 45nm dual-core chips do 4ghz on air! DDR3 isn't necessary, it's realatively newer tech so it's still a bit on the pricey side, but really going with some good DDR3 or some excellent DDR2 RAM either way should work fine. A quality 750W at maximum power supply will be enough.

No (I would rather have a fast dual than a slow quad)
no (I built a SLI comp with a 235watt PS, so PS size depends on the GPUs)
no (DDR2 is fine)

Cases are very similar, look for one with the least restrictive airflow. (air entering the front and exhausting the rear)

This is an excellent example of a very good case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112099

Notice the free flowing fans, and the Hdd rack is lined up with front intake fan.

antec 900, or 1200 is a solid case.... i have the Cooler Master Stacker 832 and its huge and will fit anything inside it and has extreme air cooling capabilities. any case with atleast three 120mm fans should do you well. 6 120mm fans would be prefered but would be more expensive. If i were you i would have my set up as follows:

intel e8400 or q6600 and OC them about 30% or more if you desire.
4870, 4850x2, 4870x2, gtx 260, 9800gx2 gtx 280 either one of those, price is the only concern in that.
an Asus mobo i always use when building high quality PCs. I find them the most trusted ive had experience with. any x38 or x48 asus motherboard or an asus p45 mobo such as a P45Q Pro or Deluxe or the ddr3 version if you decide to go that route.
for ram i would recomend 2-4 gigs, 4 prefered will make your pc stay ontop of current games longer. good brands are mushkin, Crossair, kingston, geil, patriot, crucial, OCZ, get a kit with heat spreaders which is a thermal heatsink that covers the ram. Dont buy value ram its cheep and slow. ram with lower timings are faster and better such as 4-4-4-12 compared to 5-5-5-18 the first one is faster unless their speeds are different. any ram above 1066mhz should do you well. i have 2 gigs of OCZ flex 1200mhz 5-5-5-18 which are set at 1066mhz 4-4-4-12 with my cpu OCed 30% which is nice.
get a 20x sata dvd burner.
i dont think you need a 1tb hdd. i have a 250gig sata and its fine. unless you have tons of games you shouldnt need more than 250gigs. i have a seagate hdd which is real fast and ive had WD hdds and their nice too, also ive herd about the seagate 7200.11 hdds which are amazingly fast but i have not tried them personally. if you want even more speed get two 250hdds and set them in a raid 0 array and itll boots your performance through the roof.
get a good cpu cooler if you plan to OC a zalman 9700 is good, or a thermalright ultra 120 is also good.

Honestly Id would go with a GTX260 but if you want to go with a 48XX its your choice.

Id recommend you to go with an ASUS P5Q mobo, they are cheap and OC very well.

If youre going with ATI and want to Xfire in the future get this one ASUS P5Q PRO @139.99$ w/ 20$ on MIR.

If you dont want to Xfire then get this one: ASUS P5Q SE @99.99$

Any mobo with P45 and good brand (Asus, Gigabyte, etc). I recommend the Asus P5Q Pro or P5Q-E. Gigabyte ones might be a little bit better IDK, but Asus ones are a bargain and always do top 3 in quality of any of their cards in every segment. You simply can't go wrong with Asus.

CPU as they said, E8400 is the best one for gaming.

Corsair does a really good PSUs and are generally on the cheap side.

For memory and gaming only, my recomendation is to buy 2-4GB DDR2 (4gb for Vista) and don't even bother to buy the best one out there. Just pick DDR2 800/1066 with good timings (again not even the best/expensive ones)and a bit OC headroom if you ever want to OC. For pure gaming (no benchmarking) OC headroom is not even necessary with a P45 board. You can select the desired ram speed without the need to deal with ratios and in gaming ram speed has close to 0 effect. Here is a comparison of ram speed through many tests: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ram-speed-tests,1807-8.html

Bear in mind those test were made at low resolution (the higher the res or AA level the smallest the difference) and also that the most expensive ram tested there is probably 4x-6x more expensive than the cheapest/slowest one. The price difference will probably be best spent elsewhere.

The graphics card is very difficult to recommend right now, as both Nvidia and Ati have very good offerings with similar performance/price ratio and price segments. By your price limit probably you are looking at HD4870 1GB or a GTX260 216SP. Overall are very similar with one being over the other depending on the game. The best thing you can do is think about what specific games you want to play, look at some benchmarks and start from there. Now Ati is a little bit faster generally, but today personally I would take the Nvidia card anyday. CUDA works (as you can see on TPU home page) and there's many software coming out really soon, PhysX works and there are more than 50 games coming in the next few months. What more can I say?

If your going to be running a big card like the 4870x2 then get a 24+" monitor otherwise you'll be wasting your money. 1920x1200 and larger go with a 4870x2, gtx280. Lower resolution any of the others already mentioned would be great choices.

Maybe you should copy my rig: Not suggesting exact but do something similar

E8500 w/ S1283 cooler
Asus Maximus Formula
G.Skill 2x2GB 800 MHz or 1066MHz if you have enough money
Vellociraptor (Not suggesting that if you want more disk space, get a 500 GB or 750 GB WD)
HD4870 or HD4870x2
Almost all CD/DVD drives are good. Just pick whats best for you
For 4870 series you should get LCDs at high resolution. 1650 x 1080 or more
For case you can pick a full tower to fit everything since most of these components are big.
PC P&C 610 Watts
Vista 64-bit ultimate
Sound card is optional and it happens that I need it.

In this part: "must: 22"+ 1200p LCD"
...what does "1200p" mean?

I'm also working on building a computer ( in http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=73664 ) though I'm a little confused on the specs on LCD monitors. I'm interested in a 22" or larger that is high quality, yet is still fairly inexpensive considering how much $$$ monitors can cost. Thank you! :)

Heres the break down for pricing, Using paypal and windows live I got most of this at 30% cash back on ebay after 60 days so:

Mother board gigabyte p45 d4sr 182 = 127 (+could get a $20 rebate)
hard drives (x3 samsung 1tb) 364 = 228
processor w/fan q9450 275 = 202
2 x 2 ozc ram pc 800 60 = 42 (trying for $20 rebate as well)
His ati 4870x2 519 = 383
Corsair 1000w 239 = 177
Antec full (blue) 55
Fans 2 x 120 1x 80 25
windows xp 64 Free from another build
using a dell 2405w monitor I bought in 2006

totoal cost $1239 after cash back though if I chose a different card im sure the whole build would be under $1000 easy. for a monitor why not the hauppage 28" $499 = $375 after cash back
