Which PSU ?

Hello all,

Yet again, I'm in need of some assistance. Do excuse all my questions, i'm generally new to all of this. Give me a couple of months and i'll know my stuff. (Hopefully).

What PSU will I be needing for this rig. I've put one in at the moment, but i'm not sure if its powerfull enough.

Don't get that psu. The psu is one area you absolutely do not want to cut back. If a psu dies on you, it can kill everything in your system. It is by far the most important component in your system.

Look to grab a Corsair, Seasonic, PCP&C, or a Thermaltake Toughpower.

its brand you want, not wattage.

The corsair line are awesome, i'd go look at them. You could also look around the forums here for people with similar hardware (cough me, cough) and see what they're using.

As WileE has already said.

Any one of those will serve you well.

i dont like coolermaster PSU's. i've only used upto 500W models, and they were all junk.

edit: and raptor beat me to the rest. the OCZ's are good as well, and often very cheap - the downside is that they have poor reliability if you push them to their limits (basically its fine, as long as you only have one video card)

seasonic designs have a very high reputation. Wattage isnt the most important thing, its quality.

who cares if it can put out 750W, if its 12V rail goes between 11.8 and 12.2V while doing so. Who cares if it does 750W, but it dies a horrible death in 6 months.

Just to mess with your head, my PC despite its massive OC doesnt even use 400W, last time i checked it was around 340 at full load (video card + all 4 CPU cores)

Waslock I see your looking at an ASRock motherboard. They are next to garbage, I highly recommend you pick an asus p35 chipset one. They shouldn't be too much more.

also you need to pick a heatsink for that processor since it's OEM.

suggestions if you want to overclock:

Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme (doesn't come with a fan)

Xigmatek HDT-S1283

Also with powersupplies its more quality that you want. techpowerup has a guide on here to know what's what.

Well, Seasonics are good, but there are Seasonic derivatives such as Corsairs (HX520/620 and TX650) that are rated better and give more bang for the buck. The TX650 is just a few quid more and will power the rig just fine and you could add another 4850 in the future just fine.

Antec True Power Quattro 1000W

I have SMOKED hardware and it is still kicking

remember the big PSU use less power and save you money. They only pull what you use, and if it's over kill it does not have to work as hard.

Any of the Corsair are great. What I am disappointed in is that nobody mentioned an 80+ efficiency. This seems to be a huge plus, as it will help your power bill alot more, and generally means a more efficient design.

I can tell you, with my system, I'm drawing no more really then 400W. Yes you should have some headroom, which something like 520w will give you. A "FULL" load will never happen.It means you must have all fans on high, burning a CD, copying files from your Card reader, have all your USB ports plugged in (and copying), all while running 3DMark in the background.

The only use I would even REMOTELY considering something above 750w would be if I had a full tower Antec 1200 with all my bays filled with Drives, and running SLi GTX 280s or higher.

For you, you truely only need a 520 or so to be safe. I overshot mine when I build, but I planned on having some headroom if I ever got a second 8800GTX. Never happened, but still. I planned.

If you plan on XFiring, then go with something like the 650w or so. I don't know why people without super monoliths buy these 1000w PSUs. Such a waste of money.

I have the HX620, and let me tell you its awsome. You don't need anything more with the system you have there. The 80+ efficiency is awsome and its modular design means you only use the plugs you need. They are just great.

Very true. I have a thermaltake and it is excellent. Though there are other very good companies out there.
