i used to use older versions of PCLOS and it was good, although KDE is really intensive on slower machines, i would also recommend using xubuntu. As for hardware support suck it and see is really the only way to tell.

yeah it has AS5 on gpu only as memory has thermal pads, i can really get the cpu to go higher as its hitting its limit on the stock air, im looking at a new HSF soon as i have some money.

could be the psu, as on first boot the system could be pulling to much load, but once the hdd etc has settled the psu can cope, try lowering you o/c for a few days and see if it makes a different. when you turn your system on it surges for a short while while everything powers up properly and...

have you run a malware/adware scan i.e spybot etc as that can sometimes be the cause not just viruses.
