Intel could have just made their i5s & i3s similar to the i7 layout with No Connects & their ICH chips reconfiguring accordingly. That strategy could well sink AMD deeper than ever.

The air intake comes from the bottom, thru the drives then along the right side panel area and out the back. That is why they have added those grommets to minimize recirculation. Note that the plastic cover on the back of the hotswap drive bays, prevent the air from entering the mobo area.
