TSeries TA990FXE Leads AM3+ Charge for Biostar

Nearly identical to the 890FX board I have from them. I will NOT buy this one. The SATA layout and PCIe layout are lousy, and the BIOS is simply not up to par for a gamer. I really like Biostar board, and we have 7 of them in my family for all the regular machines and servers, but for gaming...

How do you turn off video acceleration in Vista 32-bit?

This most likely has nothing to do with hardware. Screeching from the power subsystem is not uncommon, nor bad. when you're hammering your CPU or any other motherboard regulated power consumer, the PWM section has to keep up per its design spec. Most likely the huge CPU load is caused by...

    Media remote control

Believe it or not, I use the el cheapo Microsoft remotes (ebay for $5 most of the time). I have a bunch of media center PCs on all our TVs for netflix, skype, etc. The IR receiver is a bigger problem. Try to get one of the real microsoft MCP IR receivers if you can, much less hassle and...

SDD or HighPoint RocketRAID 640 ?

I have all of the above (several SSDs and numerous RAID configs including Highpoint, Promise, AMD and Intel, plenty of Raptors) What is absolutely true, regardless of the silly reviews everyone reads, is that with the exception of $600 SSDs, they all feel about the same, with the exception of...

Zalman Intros ZM-RHS90 VRM Heatsink for Radeon HD 4890, HD 4870

This is actually GREAT news for water cooling people. You can now buy a GPU waterblock that is not full coverage, and use these to cool the VRM section, as opposed to spending 4 times as much on a full coverage and have to replace them every time you update your graphics cards! Hooray!

First AMD Benchmarks With DDR3 Memory Posted

I'm staying with DDR2 AM2+ until there is a material difference that I can feel in day to day work, or DDR3 is almost as cheap as DDR2 is now. While the amount of data moved in and out of memory with DDR3 is somewhat greater, remember that DDR3 was really motivated by large power...

    Is phsyx worth it?

Is phsyx worth it? Simple answer.... No The calculations that get accelerated via the Physx technology can be done in a zillion ways. Ageia had a sketchy business plan to begin with, and Nvidia buying them was a sympathy f*@k for the venture guys that had invested in it. Hardware...

    Asus AH 3450 / HTP/ 256M and GPU-Z

It might be that Asus didn't add the data to the BIOS on the card too. I have several Asus 3450 PCIe cards, and they don't have all the data in them either. The 4850s I have from Asus are fairly complete.... Might just be that Asus cheaped out with the "low end" cards

    ASUS EAH4850 Issue

I have 2 of them running in crossfire... Very early cards too, got them the first day. I actually did change the coolers to thermalright, made a huge difference. They are solid as a rock. But I just noticed that Asus released a new BIOS for the EAH4850 series last week that has a bunch...

    Cat 8.9 is out!!!

I have RBE modded BIOSes too, and I have NO video with 8.8 and 8.9 after install. I'm gonna try reflashing to stock, and then see what happens. I have early Asus 4850 BBAs, 3 in crossfire. What a PITA

Water cooling: How do I select the parts?

OK. Instead of link pointing, I'll try and give some real info. 1) Freezone systems are not what they appear. Expensive, loud, and no worky. It is an interesting idea, but lousy execution with way too many compromises. Biggest waste of $300 I ever had. 2) It does take time to get...

    cooling suggestions for these mobos

I'm gonna get one of those as well. I would like the DFI, but they might not be in the US for another couple of months apparently. If I get the Biostar, I'm gonna put some heatsinks on the FETs where the power subsystem is. Other than that, not sure if anything will really make that much...

    CPU:DRAM on AMD790FX

Yes, had to manually enter into BIOS. AOD does suck for most things, although maybe we've found a new use for it :toast:

    CPU:DRAM on AMD790FX

Milosh gave a nice reply and is consistent with what I have learned with my 790FX boards over the past 8 months or so. Only 1 thing I would add is that one of the only things AOD is useful for, is dynamically setting memory timings. It works most of the time (not always, does cause some...

Do you actually check how the TIM is applied?

Thanks for that sage wisdom :toast: In my drawer at the moment, AS5, AS Ceramique, Thermalright ChillFactor, Zalman STG1, Balance Stars Gold, plus some Akasa and 3M tape. I've used these and others over the years, and found almost ZERO difference. The heatsink design airflow make far...
