    I run at 872mhz/1261mhz without it kicking in, temp about 75C. Could run at 1300mhz in Crysis, but in Oblivion I got some weird colors, and the VPU recovery kicked in.

    Go with a dualcore, you can get them real cheap now + ATI HD3850/3870 512MB, If he playes games at 1280x1024, he should be able to play most of the shit out there with a good framerate, but crysis will make it struggle. ( most of the gfx-cards struggles, so dont worry about that ) And ofcourse...

    Bioshock runs VERY well on the 3870, so the 3850 shouldnt have any problem :)

    CPU is the bottleneck, but not to much, remember, you'll be able to play most games at max settings at a framerate above 60fps.... ( Crysis average is 20fps at high, 1440x900 ) But the CPU doesnt care about AA / AF or high res, it cares about the load it gets from psychics, AI and stuff...

    I've got the 3870, and 7.11 work as it should, games run stable..... No issues on my XP SP2, no need for patched either.
