IMHO GeForce 6600 of better 6600 GT is the best in mainstream now, ati offers nothing there now in this middle class :D coz i dont think 9800 is a good chioce now, too old architecture (cehck shaders version etc....)

i encountered this when i overclocked my 9550 too high (core - not mem) and then drained maximum output (doom3 for 2 hrs). So I had to lower freq from 420 to 405 and now its rock stable. But if your card runs default freq.....you shoud try to underclock or (better) RMA it.
