I've had it with AVG. Ver. 7 gave me an error and told me to reinstall it, and that happened several times. I was using ver. 8, but then I discovered that I can't turn off its services. Even when I try to manually kill its processes, they either don't turn off, or they just restart right after. Even after I turned off all of its services in msconfig, and the GUI menu itself said that there were no components running, there were still 2 processes running that wouldn't shut off. On top of all that, it's what I discovered was causing Call of Duty 4 MP to crash.

So, my question is: Is there a good, free Anti-Virus program that won't run when I don't want it to, and won't cause problems with my games?

Avast is probably the best free anti-virus. On a side note it is sometimes more effective to configure services using services.msc as opposed to msconfig.

I have used Avast for a few years now. I am very happy with it.

hmm...well i used to use Avast but it didn't like Vista on my rig so i switched to AVG. then that started to get buggy so i switched to this:

http://www.download.com/PC-Tools-AntiVirus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10625067.html

which is pretty good. don't know if you can shut it down completely like you want, but it seems a smaller unobtrusive program

now with the latest version of AVG i'm back to that. which i like best. so far so good

Just downloaded Avast, and it actually just found a virus in a place that's been scanned several times by other virus scanners, so that's good. And thanks for the services.msc tip. :) Forgot about that one.

Thanks for your helpful input.

Edit: VVVVVVVVVV

Yet again.

Yep He is right COMODO. I been testing their AV and Firewall. Both seem to be pretty good.
