Edit: Found a workaround in this post http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=276683

This is resulting in high start up temperatures, and it only revert back to normal state after i enter and exit a 3d app.

The GPU1 utilization is also booting rather high, in the 80%+

Using Cat 8.10 (not hotfix) - CCC show 507Mhz in both GPUs but Rivatuner and Everest show the difference, and i know they are correct because of temps

I think im able to fix it by creating a profile with GPU clocks Want0 and Want1 with 500Mhz, but then i would have to create a separete profile for gaming and the last time i did that, my pc would boot, but when CCC loaded, screen flashing and BSOD

hmm . . . no idea then. Try flashing the bios to the reference one, see if that levels it out? could just be a corruption on the initial bios.

is that just booting into 2D clocks?

The second card, yes. The first card is booting directly into 3D tho. From what I gather, that's what he's trying to prevent, as it unnecessarily drives up temps and power consumption.

dont worry about the 3D clocks.they only run at 3D..
if you look at CCC when in 2D mode (f.e. desktop) both cores work at 507/500

but the temps correspond to 750Mhz when i am able to decrease the clock, temps lower about 10C

I get this. On boot, core 1 is at 3d clocks and never drops to 2d. Sometimes it will show 47% activity when I am doing nothing on boot. Start any full screen 3d application then exit and core 1 will fall to 2d clocks. I use a Humus demo when I first boot for a few secs then exit it. Works like a charm.

I'm on Vista x64 SP1 and using the official Cat 8.10 drivers.

Fast I actually know what he's talking about. The cores will be running at 507 or so catalyst says but your activity for the gpu will be at 135% or so until you run a 3d app then turn it off. The fix to this issue he posted as an edit to the beginning of this thread. That is to set your 2d clock to something lower than 507 in your profile.

Hi all !
my HD 4870x2 (Sapphire radeon) single ( No CF) also suffers with this ''start-up'' issue
(High load on ONE GPU .. rare both CPU's, rare it will affect both gpu cores,
but on every re-start i see this ... it will get some crazy load.. 524% activity etc.

and also same :) '' self healing '' symptoms LOL -
'' only run any 3D app, once and the problem is gone '' ..

( I am new here, my fist post, i am sorry, please excuse me if i do wrong with attachments or links to image share ..)

Here i have created 3 screens with details and markups .. as i have tried to get help different places,
but its seems quite difficult to describe to others without any evidence or visual materials

screen 1 - here it got loaded both .. sometimes CCC does not show the load but if look to
Everest panel - see the most low area these VRM 'A' amperage? --
also even touch the card .. it is HOT ! by soft mon. it goes ~ 90-96 .. have seen 105 C ! on desktop IDLE ..damn

http://img411.imageshack.us/my.php?image=issue1jj0.png

screen 2 - only one GPU is loaded ..

http://img401.imageshack.us/my.php?image=issue2gg2.png

screen 3 - here it seems to be Normal 2D mode as should be ...

http://img291.imageshack.us/my.php?image=issue3zq2.png

So if look on these GPUZ panels / i open 2 GPUz window per GPU , set one GPU on one side
so there is seen some 'anomalies' or mismatch? between core speed on CCC and GPU-Z

So far my current card is still on factory bios and with original ( stock cooling )
i run it single on Rampage Extreme board with QX9650 on top.
Have been nVidia user recently, actually this is my first ATI GFX over many mny years
and now just such a booomer .. / if recall correct, my last owned ATI .. was maybe ~ somewhere on AGP eera :) 7-8 years ago :)

so i s this issue based on CARD or just some cards ? or is this OpSys ? or driver problem
i am out of ideas .. i got multi-boot (different HDD's setup..)
i have chanch to try this same thing diff opsys's ( Xp Pro 32bit and Vista HP 32bit)
- sofar the same issues occur :(

BTW this does not happen with ( older driver what was included/boxed with card )
just rollback vista to factory driver, so far it seems going, though some artifacts and crash in Vantage :( ,
also others, there is no Fan Conrtol at all, maybe more problems )

any way have read bios flash'ing tutorials but haven't touched anything yet
just dont want kill this card .. well, will see forward,
anyway Big Thanks in Ahead,
any options and ideas are welcome and appreciated

Thanks, Regards

CY
