Well, I have an ati radeon hd 2400 pro (128mb) and all that I can say is that it's pretty underpowered, but what can you expect, I only paid AU$999 for the whole computer.

I'm looking at buying a new card. I have a budget hovering around $150-$170 (australian dollars) for the card, but it's becoming increasingly difficult because of our dollar.

Anyway, I'm trying to decided between this Saphire ATI Radeon HD 3850
Or this MSI Nvidia GeForce 9600GT.

Which one should I look at getting? The 9600gt takes up two expansion slots, but that's not too much of a problem. The 3850 is starting to show its age, but I don't really want a very high powered card, I just want something that can play games better than my current card.

So, which one should I get? Thanks :)

Edit: Oh and if you look, I'm going to buy an Antec Earthwatts PSU (probably)

9600gt is much stronger. Go for the nvidia. :p
4% more for a large increase. XD

I was leaning towards that one. It's only $8 more than the 3850 so it's not too bad.

What about the 3870? I found that for $169.

There is a powercolour 4850 I'd get but it's $193. There's also (last one) an ECS 9800gt but if their mobos are anything to go by then I won't get that.

Aussie pricing, lots different to USA.

@ OP...Get the 9600GT, but here:

http://www.arc.com.au/?VIDMSIPX9600GT

I have just bought both them cards (like literally, exactly the same cards) for two computers I am building. Obv, the 9600GT is a lot faster, and the big red MSI cooler is nice.

If the 9800gt is only a little more than the 9600gt then go for it. If it's reference, you probably won't have a problem.

9800GT's aren't bad, 9600GT's are awesome for the price and power consumption.
You will be good either way, but don't get a 3850 if you are looking at either of those.

That wasn't really on the list, but the 9800gt is a 8800gt...

Honestly, the 9600GT performs pretty much on par with a 8800GT when overclocked and uses less power.

I would look at the 8800gt, but to tell the truth, I can't find it anywhere.

That arc thing is confusing, how do I know what I'm buying? They have nothing on there about it, just a buy button.

Its got it in the title:

MSI Nvidia GF9600GT 512MB

Its more of a pick up store than online thing, as they have heaps of stores here in NSW. Thats why their website isnt up to scratch (because you just check out the products in store).

But they do ship out and are fairly cheap. Also, I can confirm its this 9600GT (as I have bought one off them last week):

http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=130&cat2_no=136&prod_no=1405

The one with the red cooler.

It's a shame that I live in Tassie. All of the computer stores are really expensive down here, so online ordering is the way to go for me.

ITestate, Skycomp and ddcomputer seem like the best bets for me to buy from.

I'm not sure if I can get it anymore. I'll post a photo of the inside of my computer when I get home, but I don't think it'll fit very well in my case. Anybody very knowlegable with the dell insipron 530 case? It's annoying because the hdds are mounted along the side and it would cover the southbridge chipset.

Yer you can order and get shipping from ARC.

See the above three shops you mentioned are moreso online shops than pickup stores. While they all have shops (where I pick my stuff up from as well), they only have one store NSW wide. Im just lucky they are close to me.

See ARC have 5 stores in NSW, making them more of a retailer than etailer :)

BTW How much room is there in the case? I will measure the 9600GT when I get home if you want.

Pretty much just the width of a matx motherboard. I can get it past the hard drive, it'll just mean re-routing the sata cords.

I rekon it'll fit, I just want to make sure before I buy it really.

9600GT for sure. My friends 9600GT is on par with my HD3870, so it should stomp the poor 3850.

Well the 9600GT is around about 3cm bigger than the width of the P5QL-Pro. The P5QL-Pro isnt standard ATX side width wise, its 19cm while normal ATX is 24cm.

Now, mATX is 24cm wide as well, so if the card is 19cm + 3cm, its 22cm...smaller than a mATX :)

yeah 9600GT all the way it surely punch HD3850 in both benchmarks and games. mine scored past 14k but heavily OC'ed Quad. If it doesn't have the blackscreen issue when vmod is applied then I am surely it can reach 14k even more easily with 800MHz OC on core :slap:

If you can find a 55nm 9600GT that is a new revision + die shrink it can OC 800MHz without any vmod :toast:
