I was using my computer then Avira AntiVir program detected a Trojan TR/Packed.23766 [trojan]. I told it to deny access then for some reason a few seconds latter my computer restart it self.

Once logged back in Vista i lost one of my hard drive (1 terrabyte). I thought it was a bug with windows so i restarted a few more times but the drive still did not show up. I went into the bios and it doesnt seem to detect the drive.

My mobo have two SATA controller. I have two 160gb hdd on one controller and the 1tb on the other controller. I tried to swap the 1tb to the other SATA controller and it still did not see the drive.

The drive is about 3 months old. I am not sure what happen. Anyone please help. I had all my data stored on the lost drive. Any info will help. Thanks.

Trojans don't usually cause any damage like that. If the drive is no longer detected by bios, it is dead. RMA time.
Also, did you power off computer, and restart?

My question exactly!!!! Did you shut the computer completely down, unplug the power, hold the power button in for 30 seconds or so, and then plug it back in and power up the system?

I did not try that. I just turn off the system. and power it back ok. Did not do the unplug and hold power button but 30 seconds. What does this accomplish?

Also check to make sure it's showing up in the hardware in BIOS... if it's showing up in your bios, then it's a software issue... not in bios, check to make sure it's power connector and cable haven't come undone somehow... if all is connected I'd say RMA

That will dissipate all power from the system completely! Try it, and when you power back on the system, if the hard drive still does not show up, do the same thing, and then while the system is down, unplug, the hard drive, and plug it back in and then power the system back up! You have to remember, that there is a 3 volt CMOS battery in your system, that keeps information for the BIOS. Once you power down, you can also "clear CMOS" as well. But, this of course will set your BIOS back to factory defaults, and anything that you saved will be undone, that is why I suggest unplugging the drive and re plugging it in with the power totally dissipated before clearing the CMOS.

I have already checked disk management, it did not show up there or the Bios. I have also tried to reset my bios to factory default. Also unplugged the power from the hdd a few times. Only i havent tried yet is to hold the power button to clear the power. I will try that.

The most drastic thing you could try is to reset cmos. You will need to move a jumper over to do that. Leave on reset for a few minutes, even remove cmos battery if needed. Then put jumper back. Should not require this though, I'm suspecting the hd at this point...
If you do this, you will have to go into bios setup again and reset everything again.

Ok, try that, and then the next step is to check the disk itself. I guess we need to know what brand of drive it is for the diagnostic utility.......IE Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor, etc...

it is a seagate. I see that seagate have some tools on their site for diagnostic but would it work if the bios doesnt even see the drive?

So you've tried a complete reset by jumper (on the motherboard!) of the bios?
Oh lord, it's a seagate, rma time, and replace it with a samsung, didn't realize we were talking about a 1tb seagate, ditch it...
or even wd

As you can see, he has already reset the bios.

@Sumasage, maybe! Download the ISO file, which is a bootable disk image, burn that to disk, and restart your computer with the burnt disk in your optical drive. Now make sure that you have your CD/DVD as your first boot device, and the Seatools will boot up first.
From there you can run the diagnostic check and see if it will see your drive.
Something that I just thought about while typing the above paragraph, have you tried changing the SATA cable, and or the power cable to that drive? I know that sounds crazy, but then again!
Be sure to download the Seatools for DOS, that is the ISO version.

Here is the site, and the download page you want.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

I just wanted to make sure about the reset, didn't want to be redundant, but gotta try! And yes, I used to like seagates, have 3 of the older .10s running in my rig right now. But google 7200.11 failures, and you'll see what I mean.

The 1st thing i would check is if the drive is actually powering up.

A simple way to do this is:

1. Turn PC off
2. Remove side from PC case
3. Get a relatively long screwdriver (20-30cm)
4. Place blade of screwdriver on the metal case of harddrive
5. Place your ear firmly onto the handle of the screwdriver so it blockes any sound from room
6. Power up your PC
7. Listen for the drive spinning up or any strange noises...clicks, whirrs etc

tried all the above - flush power, seatool iso, different power and sata cable. Nothing worked. Oh and no physical noise from the drive either. Yes this is the 7200.11 drive. If i knew about this i would not use seagate. This sucks! I lost so much personal data :(

Thanks guys for your quick responses.

Let me know if anything else i should try.

Well if your drive is not powering up the only things i can suggest are:

Try a diff pwr connector (a known working one)
Try drive in a diff PC
Send drive to a data retrieval company (if the data is worth spending a chunck of cash on)
RMA drive :/
