well xmas is coming near and my gdad always gives me 300 bucks and i already got 100 from my foster parents, and i want to upgrade my computer. i was looking at the XFX GTX 260 Black Edition which is faster than a stock GTX 280, but if i get that i wouldn't be able to get a P45, i only want to spend ~325 max since i support my css clan's scrim server($65). Now my question is will my q6600 @3ghz bottleneck the GTX 260 at 1680x1050?, or would you guys recommend just going with an HD 4870 and a Gigabyte P45 UD3R to improve my cpu oc and eliminate any bottleneck i'd get. open to other suggestions as well, not going i7 or waiting for phenom 2

No bottleneck at your current speed.

Your quad has more than enough juice at those speeds and res.

In benchmarks with a Q6600 and GTX260 I would notice a higher score at higher clocks and more-so with a much faster dual, but in reality with gaming there was little to no extra in performance. Depending on resolution the GPU is depended on more for it's job...I'd say a decent bus speed and 3.0-3.6ghz is a good combo to last quite a while tbh. I almost miss having a quad anymore...the fast dual is nice, but not necessary.

That's the factory speed for the EVGA "FTW" Edition. Wonder if there was any particular reason they settled on that number.

I recommend just going with an HD 4870 and a Gigabyte P45 UD3R to improve your cpu oc and eliminate any bottleneck. Then sell your 680. I would.

There's nothing wrong with the 680 for low-mid OC's, it's a decent performer and if he wants to go SLI he's set. As-far-as performance he won't gain anything other than a higher failure rate, crappier drivers and a higher operating and idle temperature with the 4870, the 1GB variant would be the closest match to the 260. Really either way would work, just depends on what one would want to go for. Don't get the 48xx or 260 because of the hype get it because it fits the bill of what you want and what you need, and how long you plan to keep it. Do some research and make the choice that suits your needs...I love my GTX it's a great card, many others are catching on to that fact as it's performance is very strong, it runs pretty damn cool, and flat out gets the job done. So does the competitor, but imo it failed in too many areas to warrant me spending MORE money for a product that was too close in performance with more issues. Things have changed on both sides since then (around mid-july), but performance is still close, and it really comes down to what you want.

As-far-as overclocking, I've seen many 680i's go beyond the 400FSB range which at 400 lines up perfectly for 3.6Ghz on a Q6600 which is MORE than enough for modern gaming...I had one at that speed, and it performed great, but I gained little to no gaming performance beyond 3GHz, and really gained maybe 1-2FPS between the stock 2.4Ghz and 3.6Ghz (when gaming at 1440x900 and 1680x1050) with a small range of an x1950xtx, 9600GT and GTX260. Overclocking the GPU is far more effective in gaming than the CPU and system overclocks are overall. Sure it helps to have some system overclocking, it will help in the future with games that take advantage of more than one core (which more games are doing now...), but if 4 cores at 3GHz can't handle a modern game...odds are it's either an unoptimized mess or way ahead of it's time.

Having a good and OC'd gaming rig on a many budgets is more about mixing what you want and need, a little excess never hurts because as-long as you keep the rig stable and in-line odds are it will be around longer if you're not upgrading every other month, which can be a nice payback to a good investment.

I've got the same CPU, but at 3.2GHz@400FSB, and I have an eVGA GTX260 Core 216 Superclocked on the way. I believe you will have some bottlenecking in benchmarkes(I already did with my SLi 9800GTX's), however in real world applications you shouldn't have a problem.

I have an Asus Striker, P45, q6600, e8600, 4870 and 280gtx. In all possible combinations i tried i came to the following conclusion.

The E8600 + 280GTX in P45 was the winner, followed by the 4870. The E8600 had no issues reaching 5Ghz+ from 3.33.

The Q6600 + 280GTX in P45 fell behind in game testing due to the lower clock speeds of the CPU. Followed by the Q6600 + 4870 in P45 which had the same issue. The Q6600 had no issues reaching 3.6Ghz+ from 2.4.

The 680 Striker held back the Q6600, inturn giving lower results.

I recommend you stick with the Q6600 because its a damn fine CPU, even thou most games dont utilize more then a single core. Upgrade the motherboard so that you are able to reach your CPU, ram and gfx limits where possible ( Do you have a G0 stepping Q6600 ?) in combination with the 4870 as soon as they drop the price (AMD/ATi said they will, i forgot where i was reading that.) You will find the 4870 a greater value for money with great performance compared to the 280GTX. Especially if your only playing counterstrike.

Trust me to assume it was a 280GTX you were talking about . . . Ooops. Im not doing all that again, lol. Umm, i guess i would still recommend the same. P45 + 4870. Next time ill actually read the post twice

i read a review yesterday where the GTX260 black (666 core clock) was holding jsut behind a Zotac AMP edition GTX280! (700 core clock)

i found that amazing and am now convinced my GTX260 @ 729/1458/2430 w00ps a stock GTX280 :)

Your Q6600 at 3GHz will be more than enough to get the full performance from GTX 260 216. So go ahead with the same CPU and make sure you get the GTX 216 core itself. If you are planning to get a 4870 which has almost same performance as a GTX 260 216, then buy the 1GB version of the card, and NOT the 512MB card. Anyway i would vote for the GTX 260 216 any day.

Btw have you tried OCing your Q6600 further? It's not necessary for a GTX 260, but anyhow nothing wrong in getting more out of it. Try it once :)

the core 216 is a real 280 killer, being around 10% behind in benches (from what ive noticed the difference is LESS, which is odd, they mustahve tweaked the core, maybe newer steppings?), its a sinch to get 280 performance, and MUCH better cost.

Very true Wolf, i ordered mine at $ 216.9. :)

An SLI of 260 216s can be done at a reasonable price comparable to that of an pre-OCed 280, but this SLI setup will blow away all others.

alright thanks everyone, haha and i'm just playing css and tf2 right now cause i'm on the 7800GTX. I like eye candy and will be playing fallout 3, crysis warhead, and maybe farcry 2. And of course the upcoming starcraft 2. I have gotten my q6600 G0 to 3.2ghz stable but i didn't like the temps that much so i dropped back to 3ghz, but i'm going to go with the XFX GTX 260 Black Edition and keep the 680i, might spend 30 more bucks on a Xigatek S128X rifle or w/e. ahh can't wait to have it, thx again. That quad at 3.2 rocks buddy, go ahead with the xigmatek or a Sunbeam core contact freezer (both are priced almost same, but i like the SCCF more) and the new card, and you will be fine.

i have a q6600 @3.2ghz and a 192sp gtx260 ,oc to 666 ,tbh nothing seems to slow it down ,even gta4 runs decently on it! .

i can only assume the 216sp 260 will be even better ,gof or it ,i think ull be pretty damned impressed with it especially compared to that rather long in the tooth 7800gtx.

If you do decide to go with a p45 board, I'll have a new DFI DK p45-T3RSB Plus coming back from RMA in a week or two. Great features on this board. I'll be selling it, since I'm I just purchase a new motherboard for a Phenom II setup. I'll be selling it cheap. Probably like $100 shipped. It might be a great option for you to go p45 and stay in your budget. LMK if you're interested.

well xmas is coming near and my gdad always gives me 300 bucks and i already got 100 from my foster parents, and i want to upgrade my computer. i was looking at the XFX GTX 260 Black Edition which is faster than a stock GTX 280, but if i get that i wouldn't be able to get a P45, i only want to spend ~325 max since i support my css clan's scrim server($65).

Well, according to your system specs in your profile, you have a 7800 GTX. Get the XFX GTX260 BE. Trust me. I have one. I went from two 3870's in crossfire and the difference was definitely noticeable. Crysis especially. Get the XFX GTX260 Black Edition, you wont regret it. It won't bottleneck your CPU, if anything your CPU will thank you for giving it a good GPU to work with.

alright thx guys, i've decided i'll get the XFX GTX 260 BE, and a cooler, i already know the xigmatek is great, looking up reviews on the sunbean contact cooler, and thx for the suggestion i didn't even know about that cooler :):toast:.

EDIT: i looked at some reviews and i'm getting the Xigmatek since it has a retention bracket for it instead of just push pins whereas the Sunbeam has an amd attachment that you have to work with a black substitue thing of somesort that you attach the amd method to
