How much of an improvement with my current system will I see with an hd4870? Is it total overkill? Future proof for a little bit? I just got a newegg gift cert from my parents, and it's burning a hole in my pocket... Would I be better off going with a 4850???

Depends on how much you wanna spend, if you want a longer lasting investment an HD4870 1GB or GTX260 would be a great choice, in many games the GTX is just ahead...but with each side releasing better drivers every month they are pretty close.

The 4850 is a good card too, depends on the resolution you need and how long you plan to keep it.

depends on how much cash you want to put into it. really depends on the resolution. GTX260 is also a good option. worse case 4850. or get a 1gb card.

You will be able to play any game with all the eye candy on at 1280x1024 with a 4870.

Two 4850's in crossfire can play any game period with decent frame rates at most resolutions.

Two 4870's in crossfire gives you unbelivable performance. You can play any game with these crossfired with eye candy at just about any resolution.

Any card you choose will be a HUGE improvment over your x1650.

my personal thought . . .

although a 4850 or 4870 would be a massive step up from your current GPU . . . although, I'm not so sure how well your PSU would be able to handle the load from either . . .

TBH, a 3850 or 3870 would also be a massive improvement, and will run a 17" monitor with ease . . . the extra money could be put aside for a new mobo/CPU/DRAM and PSU setup . . .

i believe we answered this for you already though it may have been some1 else, and yes it would be overkill, get the HD 4850 or shit even the HD 4830 which will run all games at that resolution max, and use the spare cash to upgrade your mobo, then later on your CPU.

your cpu is going to extremely limit any new card you throw at it. if you can find a cheap 1950xt, 8800gt, 3870 those would be cheaper/give similar performance. In my old 3800x2 I didnt notice much of a difference between a 1950GT and a 3870 in certain games..just due to my processor.

well I'm going to upgrade to either a 5000-6000+ x2 or a 9600x4 with a new motherboard if I can afford it after the video card

Get the 9600X4 + suitable board, and a HD4850. This setup will be ideal for all your games at your resolution. Also overclock your 4850 to get extra juice out of it.

overclock at your own risk, but i don't think you'll even need it at that resolution in fact i know you won't. i only ever overclock if i'm lagging.
