Here is a very interesting article about EVE Online's server model.
It goes into some detail on the hardware, challenges and upgrades that are performed and what they are doing to meet those challenges in the near future.

Here's a couple of tidbits to spark your interest ;)
EVE server cluster is maintained in London and is currently the largest supercomputer employed in the gaming industry.
Each of EVE's 5000+ star systems is loaded as a separate process onto any one of hundreds of IBM blade servers, with some high-load systems being given a server all to themselves and many low-load systems being combined and run on servers together. These "SOL Servers" are tied into EVE's main database server where changes to the game take place

Yeah, they do it right! I've played a couple two week trials and there was never a problem. If I had more time I would pay for a subscription.

I would join EVE in a heartbeat, but I think having a satellite internet connection would make the game virtually impossible. I'd never win a battle due to transmission delays to/from the satellite. :D

its a great game. has somthing for everyone, you can build a trade empire and control the prices on certain goods, become a pirate and raid freighters as the warp thru ur space, be an anti-pie and hunt down th pirates for their ransoms, or join a high sec mining/manufacturing/research corp or join their military wing and fight in wars vrs other corps.

Only problem is its a pain to get into, u need to find a nice sized noob friendly corp who will show u the ropes.

the server is amazing piece of work, and the game a even better one, if anyone is thinking of joining just drop me a pm here or in game (ingame name: "nocturnal hunter")
kreij - try the trial and see if it lags, the trial is complete free and u can do 99% of the stuff of the full for 2 weeks :)

rule number 1 tho for this game "don't trust anyone" (unless u've been playing with them for a long time)

Has anyone tried this out for satellite internet yet? I played a little bit of it on satellite internet. Worked fairly well doing solo missions and mining. I don't know about the pvp part of it though as I didn't try it when I played the game. But I did get killed by a pirate :rockout:

yea haha be careful on where you go when you start, make sure your in at least a 0.4 security sector, any less and you may get attacked, especially in 0.0, there are some missions that require you go there, don't take them.

The game is interesting yes, played it since until the time faction ships and the likes got added. The problem is you can never get between the top players due to skill training being time based. So it's quite a waste to start nowadays in my opinion.

Specialization is the key now for younger players to get anywhere quickly as a lot of the older players have dabbled in this that and the other and arnt very good at anything ( as you know ), Example a friend of mine has played since 06/03 and he tried everything out Industry, combat, market etc and is finding it difficult to keep up with players a lot younger who have specialized in just one field. Hence his alt char who is specialized does most of the fighting lol.
But you have a valid point dan it is daunting but i suppose its what you do along the way thats fun :).

ie a game which is designed with freedom to do whatever you please becomes extremely limited. Since getting the learning skills to 5 takes a week a pop already and every other rank 1 skill you require at 5, add the fact that you'll be wanting to use larger T2 stuff. You won't be doing anything fun that fast.

I got killed in a 0.5 system by a speedy projectile type pirate. I was killing pirates in my battleship and I tried to kill him too when he came along. He just had too much on me tho lol. I will try the game out (when my bandwidth is lower so i can download the client again) for the sole purpose of pvping ppl so i can see if I'll be at any big disadvantage with my satellite connection.:banghead:

I have a question about this game then, for you people who play: Say my ship gets destroyed, and after the insurance payout, I can't afford a new ship (I think this is how it works). What happens then? I just signed up for the 21 day trial on Steam, so yeah... I need knowledge.

I think you get the basic ship for free if you can't afford a new one.

Yeah you get a basic insurance payout if you didnt up grade it and you get a basic noob/starter ship, but i will say is do the tutorial as some people skip it and struggle for the first few days/weeks.

EVE server cluster is maintained in London and is currently the largest supercomputer employed in the gaming industry.

i'm sure blizzard's wow installations are much bigger (maybe not per server). to me the sematic "supercomputer" suggests some marketing experts have found a loophole that they can get away with it

i read in several sites that eve server is indeed the biggest game server in the world
no wow server has 20000 ppl online minimum 23/7

also dan, i just started this year and i tried almost everything in game while having lots of fun, 0.0. pirating, mining, etc, u don't need to be old to play this game, it's a "Multiplayer" game, not a singleplayer game, to those ingame that knew it, goonswarm is a excelent example, skillpoints mean jackshit :D

any doubts convo me ingame and i will gladly help
my chars:
nocturnal miner
nocturnal hunter

Just a quick update, this has just happened:

A new player record after many months of waiting.

Current high: 43,697

43k+ players all in the same virtual world, with no instances or sharding.

Next step: Infiband and headless Windows 2008 servers!!

Skillpoints mean enough, I've explained this to people back in those days. People rushing into battleships and I took them down in low end cruisers. Simply because I had a mad amount of skillpoints.
Though I sold my account and my secondary got banned. Starting from scratch will just suck.
