Another question about RAM

Would there be any difference in performance between a dual-channel kit of say 512MB and a 1GB stick if they're the same brand and what not.

yes when ur playing games u will notice a fps difference because theres more ram and most games take 600-700 mb of space and that will force xp to use virtual memory even if its disabled... u coulda posted this in the other thread

Ah, not sure what you're asking, but will try to supply some "input"...

A single DDR stick (of say 1gb) doesn't do as well as 2 sticks, each 512mb combined, do iirc/afaik!

(To get the "Dual Channel" effect, you need 2 sticks in other words)

* 1gb (single stick) <> 1gb (2x512mb sticks)... maybe in memory amt., but not in performance...

Yeah, what I meant was do two sticks of 512MB (512MB X 2 = 1GB) give a different performance than 1 stick of 1GB

Ah, ok - we WERE on the "same page" then!

* Afaik? Yes, they do & using more than 1 stick (for the same memory amt. @ least) yields HIGHER performance w/ DDR RAM types... the paired sticks will outperform a single one of the same amount.

P.S.=> STILL, DO absolutely "double-check" w/ the rest of these guys & their replies, though in this thread if any more come along... I can stand correction as much as the next guy when I am "off/wrong" & it happens! We all hear things that "turn into urban legends" & all that, & can be victim to them... I have been before!

(As far as waiting out replies, imo @ least, folks here are in general FAR MORE into the "hardware fiend" end of things imo, than I am!)

yes, but, the only thing that will work is if u have same type of chips on memory and the timings are same, speeds too

Yes, if they have different chips on the sticks. Some react differently to overclocking and voltage. Even the PCB of the RAM stick is a factor in speed and latentcy.

If you really have to want to you should start at stock speeds and force the timings in the BIOS to the lower rated of the pair then increase the voltage to the highest safe voltage of the lower rated set, following this perogative to achieve the highest stability and speed.
