(This is similar to my topic in the ATi forum but of course related to possible NVidia upgrades),

I currently have a 256mb GDDR3 x1650 PRO, and am looking at some sort of budget upgrade. As far as NVidia cards I have the choice of the following: 7600GS, 7600GT, 7900GTO, 7950GT, 8500GT, 8600GT, 8600GTS, all of them 512mb GDDR3 models (aside from the 7600 cards which are 256mb DDR2, and the 8500GT which is 256mb GDDR3). I was wondering which, if any, would be worth upgrading to (i'm almost certain that the 8600GTS will be, and to a slightly lesser extent the 8600GT, but if I can get the same performace from the 79xx cards that the 86xx cards offer, I would be saving a few pounds). Before anyone jumps in and starts shouting "9800GTX!" etc, I request you re-read the first line of this post, and quite frankly I am sick of the x1650's poor performance.

Thanks all.

You would be better served with a 9600gso or 8800gs if the 9600gt or 8800gt is out of your range. the 9600 series is 10-20% less than the 8800 series but markedly above the 8600 series.

This is an 8800gs for 46 pounds including VAT:

Discussion about how one 8800gs beats 2 x 8600gts in SLI:

And I think the lowest you'll find the 8600gts ddr3 is about the same price or more.

Nice find on the 8800GS. I don't think my PSU could handle it at the moment though but it is definitely something for the future.

450w psu should be fine for it.

Whats your budget? You can get a 512MB HD4850 for as little as £112 or a GTX260 for as little as £132.

Whats your budget?

At the moment it is laughably low, under 40 pounds, the lower the better (got a lot or real life stuff coming up :twitch:).

Sure. I ran an 8800 GTX for a year on an old Antec 450W. O.P., that 8800 GS is your best bet considering your budget.

your pc can handle a 8800GS, I run 2 folding rigs with them both with 380 watt psu in them with core 2's and 1gb or ram each and its overclocked

your psu is no issue

Got a new PSU and an 8800GS/GT/GTS on my "future list", managed to get an 7600GT for 17quid to last me for now (even though it's old it still whoops the x1650 Pro something fierce). Thanks to all the responses I received, I am extremely greatful to you all.
