Hey all,

Have a question that i can not seem to figure out...

I have a Gateway laptop sitting in front of me, and am trying to install XP on it... it had Vista..

and it starts just fine, but when it gets to the point where at the bottom it has "Setup is Starting Windows" it freezes there and does nothing.

i have also had another laptop have this happen too. it was an Acer..
neither one have any problems other than the one listed above..
is there a way around this problem? or is this thing stuck with vista.

also nothing wrong with disk, tried it on different machine.

Put the Vista disc in and format/erase the HDD with it. Restart the computer and put the XP disc in for install.

use this program to do a thorough wipe of your HD and also Make sure your CD Drive and CD are Clean, if possible Try to burn a copy of your XP Disk and also learn how to slipstream SP3 into XP Pro via theeldergeek.com or paulthurott's Windows Super Site. Figure out who the Manufacturer of your Drive is and Download the Partitioning Tools which will setup the file system with the Proper Cluster Sizes

You may have to install the storage controller for your hard drive by pressing F6 during the setup. I have had this problem in the past. It all depends if the storage controller is included in the preinstalled storage drivers on your install disc.

Yup, the hard drive is probably connected via SATA so you'll have to give it a SATA/RAID driver on a floppy in order for it to proceed with the installation.

there was nothing wrong with the drive at all, in fact it was a IDE drive. what it seemed like had happened with the laptop. was one of the SSE extensions or similar had died on it,

i had tried to boot up different versions of Windows including 7 Vista and even went so far as to try Ubuntu.. all of these failed to start

and running any amount of Disk and Stress test tools led to no solution....

so the laptop has been confirmed dead, we are scheduled for bashing of said laptop at a later date pics with the update
