ok i asked this in my other thread, but this thread is directly about temps, not overclocking.....is it the Core Temp or the overall CPU temp i need to watch??? this bios says the cpu temp is actually what the core temp in everest reports

ive been told its the overall CPU temp i need to pay attention to in everest, which the phenom 2's can handle 73c max....if thats fact, whats a safe temp on the cores because they get pretty hot on load (would probably hit 70c at these voltages now....btw i have a zalman 9700 LED cooler on this chip

been having trouble overclocking this processor due to temps because this chip requires alot of voltage, i finally got it up to 3515mhz using 17.5x200 @ 1.52v

my idle temps in everest right now are as follows:

also i noticed my NB core on that picture says its at 1.31v which flucuates between that on up to 1.5v......and i know that effects cpu temp as well, settings this to stock 1.2v in bios will counter that right? no need to have it running at that voltage if im not overclocking the nb at the moment correct? hence dropping my temps a bit further......

so which is it, cpu temp or core temp? and whats a safe core temp for these chips if cpu temp is the one to watch?

thanks guys

Both can trigger shutdown, I'd personally follow your bios since they are usually pretty reliable.

Your PH II is running pretty hot...Mines at 30C Cores and 35C CPU and I'm at 3.88GHz.

On load I hit 33-36C on the Cores and 38-41C on the CPU.

You could possible have an uneven IHS which would cause air bubbles between the top of the proc and base of your HSF, air is not at all good for dissipating heat. Zalman's are pretty good about being flat but the why to test is take your proc out and run a razor blad across the top of it, one corner to the other @ 45 degree angle. See if any light comes through. If it does then you have an uneven IHS.

Also, what thermal paste did you use and how much did you apply?

pictures are always good for reference, so thanks for that......i see your core v is 1.48, the other thread i made explains why my voltages are so high.....i think i got the worst of the worst of these 720s......at 1.48 i cant even get 3300 stable

i can get 3100 on stock volts fine, but anything after that has to go beyond 1.5v to even boot windows

voltages ranges from 1.4-1.5v wont do anything for me, so its either run at 3ghz with stock v or try to overclock using something above 1.5v

what exactly do you have all your other voltages set to in your bios?

Also, what thermal paste did you use and how much did you apply?

i have been tempted to lap this cpu and see if it will do any better, but the first time i tried it on an old althlon le chip i bent the pins and i dont want to risk screwing this one up

thermal paste used was a generic brand, but it IS rated up with the top brands.....got it from a local computer store around here, and ive tried reapplying the paste about 5 times now with no difference in results

When lapping don't force it!! Take the pad that was in the proc's casing and put it over the pins. Make sure you after something as close to perfectly flat( I use the glass that comes in picture frames from the dollar store), tape your starting sand paper(I start with 320-400 cause it's rough enough to get the coating off and easy to start with). You can either dry or wet sand, wet sanding is the better of the two but not for the faint of heart. DO NOT APPLY FORCE, all your basically going to do is hold the proc and either go back and forth for 30 secs or do a figure 8 pattern for 15 reps. Once you get the coating off move to 800, sand for 15-20 min, move to 1000, and sand for another 20-25min. You can stop here since all your trying to do is get it flat but if you want a mirror finish keep going up and then finish off with a rubbing compound(DO NOT USE A WAX). After each sanding take your razor blade and check to see if it is even since your not doing this for looks. Lapping can be good, if your IHS is concaved, but remember if this is a retail proc you lose your 3yr warranty once you start sanding.

I take no responsibility if anything goes wrong

What brand is the thermal paste? Arctic Cooling MX-2 and AS5 can greatly help temps out depending on what you mean by generic. At our shop we use a silver based thermal paste by Startech so one day I tested it out against some AS5. AS5 smoked the Startech's ass!! 7-10 Celcius difference in temps

any chance you could post your full range of voltage settings from your bios as a reference?

the paste is upstairs at the moment ill have to dig it out and then ill post back, but i think i will go ahead and order some arctic 5 to see if it makes a difference in temps anyway....that is the best paste yes?

I hear Arctic Cooling MX-2 is the best and OCZ Freeze is a close 2nd. AS5 is good but what's great about the other 2 is they don't lose there thermal dynamics as fast as AS5 can over time. I get AS5 cause it's available at one of the local shops so it doesn't kill me in shipping cost(Newegg )

Bioshock and Lethalrise while both of your cpu temps are in normal range there is something I'd look into if I were either of you.
Your Motherboard temps are too high. The temp of your motherboard should never be higher than your processor unless you're on water or another advanced cooling method. It's a sign of bad airflow inside the cases.

I've already looked into it and put Arctic Cooling MX-2 on both my SB and NB and no temp change =P Besides its only 2C haha Nvidia nForce Chipsets typically run hot anyways.

Yeah but typically the MB temp should be lower than the cpu temp by several degrees. I'm using an old Asus M3A with passive cooling and my temps are below. The one I'm really concerned about though is Bioshock's, his MB temp is way higher than cpu temp which means he's keeping hot air inside his case, not a good thing.

On idle my CPU temps go lower, but on load they go higher then my mobo's. But it truly doesn't matter, as long as his temps are fine during stress test there should be no issues.

the side is off my case, and even with it on my temps only rise 2c, nzxt guardian 921 case....not to mention i have a desktop fan that plugs into the wall and moves ALOT of air pointed straight inside the case when the side is off

this motherboard is said to run that hot, the back of the box even says the drMos colling technology (whatever that means) will keep it around 50c. im guessing the 50c temp is being monitored near the mosfets......which get way hotter than 50c on other boards ive seen

my xfx 8200 i replaced with this board got up to the mid 80s range under stress

Here's with moderate load. Nvidia chipsets run hot, its normal :p Even the Intel Nvidia Chipsets run hella hot. Mines actually quite cool compared to them.

thanks for the pics of the bios lethalrise750, i just fired up everest to check what the mb temp was saying and its at 48c....one thing i noticed though, my gpu right now (ati 4850) is at 48c as well so i put my hand on the card, and then the mosfet heatsink and they feel the same....so thats where this board is getting its mb temps from, near the mosfets. 48c is fine

Nah its no alarm if a MB Temp is higher then the CPU lol...
