Is the GTX 285 really worth the $80 more than the HD 4890?

in my experience, nVIDIA Card have a better fps than Ati. Especially in some Game support PhysX such as Crysis, FarCry...

So... that 80$ will help you more in games

The GTX 285 is not worth it over the 4890. They're 50-100$ more. I still say get a 4850X2 and go tri fire

fuck no the GTX 285 isn't worth the 80 more bucks. if you look at the techpowerup review again, the GTX 285 is what? like 10% better, def not worth the 44% price difference. mind you those results were on cat 9.1, 9.4 is better 9.1 by about 1-5FPS. So the gap is lessened even more than a 11% percent difference.

GTX 275 is the bang for the buck in nVidia cards.

So these are the final cards I'm looking at:

Asus GTX 285 - $262
Zotac GTX 285 - $270
MSI GTX 275 - $183
HD 4890 - $180

Right now, I'm on the fence between the 4890, GTX 275, and GTX 285. I've read several reviews and see that the 4890 1GB and GTX 275 trade blows. However, I have also read that the 4890 overclocks to 1GHz (core clock) and has more RAM, while the GTX 275 has a stream processor clock. I have also read that the GTX 275 uses less power but runs noticeably cooler when idle and hotter under load. AFAIK, the 4890 supports DX10.1 but the GTX 275 supports DX10. Not sure how much of a difference this makes.

I would be able to get the 4890 and GTX 275 for around the same price ($180). I'm also considering if the GTX 285 is worth the additional $80 for a price of $260. I don't upgrade GPUs often and don't want to be kicking myself for missing a good deal.

Please provide any and all suggestions/insight/recommendations as I am looking to close the deal asap.

I see paying that much for the performance gain of a 285 over a 275 to be kind of silly.

And I'm an nVidiot so you won't see me suggesting an ATI card any time soon.

I wouldn't recommend the gtx 285, so boil it down even further to the 275 and the 4890. Now you should also take note what games you usually play and which of the two bring a better performance out of those games, then your choice will be made up.

the only significance that DX10.1 has for ATI cards is that it's supposed to be more compatible with DX11 than DX10 nv cards, though both are supposed to be compatible, ATI's cards from this gen should have a better performance advantage in DX11 games. Unless nvidia manages to influence with TWIMTBP on developers too much which won't surprise me. Good choice you'll be happy

It's not that big of a jump for the RV770 core since it's not as powerful as the GT200, but the extra bandwidth helps a lot at higher resolutions.

Unfortunately, they didn't have the 4890 in stock when I contact them so I ended up getting the GTX 285 for $240.

Do you guys think it's smarter to sell it for around $340 and use the money to get a 4890 with some cash left over? Or should I keep the GTX 285? The 4890 is a newer card...

The 4890 being a newer card doesn't matter. The 285 is more powerful.

Don't worry. Although Ati has a bigger GDDRam than nVIDIA but its bit interface is smaller.
The bandwith and the GPU of a VGA is the most important.

In this example, GTX285 is more powerful than 4890
