yes i am pretty sure the pci bus was locked, the motherboard locks pretty much every frequency except the ones you normally tinker with by default. unless the PCI-E bus is tied to that, my only options are AUTO, TURBO, and *some other word for real fast*'

did i fail to mention i was having problems with booting, and then major problems in windows and found out my SATA cables were loose, fixed the problem i guess unless this is related. it was already giving me problems before i found the loose SATA cables but it got real bad until i messed with the cables.

well my system is about 3-4 months old and this problem just started so i hope there is not hardware issue, but i'd really rather it be nothing, i'll try and get to safemode and run a virus scan. i did find the process i think it was dfgsrv.exe running but i stopped it and had not picked it up in any virus scan programs. checked for related files and folders online, didnt find any on my machine. i think i remember dealing with that before, maybe recurring or popped back up from system restore files...

just got 0x800106ba error on windows defender, just the past two days i have been getting errors that tell me a file is corrupted and chkdsk, i run it, it says it deletes some stuff, says it recovers some stuff, doesnt look like it helped. i am starting to think my registry is fucked up, i know i havent been messing with it though...

also i was getting boot errors, thought my HDs were screwed, turned out to be loose SATA cables...hope that didnt corrupt anything because the computer would almost run decent, then hang. checked the cables, now that problem is gone.

and what key boots to safemode?

If your video card is of recent make like X800/6800 and beyond then power supply looks to be the culprit. Although defective MB may be the issue as well. If you can change the PSU for trial then try with one of 400W of good make for this sample load (i assume you have this) MB, AGP/PCI-e card, 2 HDD, 1 CDROM, one any PCI card (like audio) load. You can isolate your problem for PSU. If it stays then suspect your MB.

I hope this helps. :)

alright i have all my other drives disconnected and found a drive that hasnt been used in years so i think that rules out the HDD, anybody have any guesses? the only thing i can think of is either the RAM, motherboard, or CPU are messed up.

ok so its not the graphics card, although there were errors regarding the graphics card swapping it out ultimately didnt solve the problem. the only issue i see now is that windows wont update to sp2 and i get a BSOD every once in a while. oh and the fact that pretty much nothing will work except for IE, this is after several fresh installs...

its hard to guess at but i dont think the hardrive is the problem.. some piece of hardware is failing thats for certain.. i wouldnt put my money on which piece thow..

if it is exactly the same overclocked or at stock its a clue.. the failing piece isnt a piece that is being sped up or slowed down by the speed changes.. if i had to guess i would say mobo or psu..

and thats a lot of things.. keep doint what u are doing and u will find it in the end..

a respair shop by the way would simple change the lot.. think of the labour charge for doing what u are doing.. he he..

i have spent hours and hours looking for what part is causing the problem.. my last one was data corruption caused by a mobo problem took me ages to pin it down.. it was an obscure one thow.. if u have a via chipset ask me what it was.. he he he

mine s a 975x chipset, and whatever the problem is being caused by it is causing data corruption on every drive i throw at it. i wish i had the money to take the easy way out and buy all new shit.

i am kinda hoping it is a motherboard issue though because it wouldnt mind getting my hands on a conroe-capable board...

mine was data corruption.. it took three months of usage to even know i had a problem.. nothing show up in scandisk but the odd strange thing happened in the odd game..

i installed a creative sound card.. within a few days the system started falling apart.. i cursed creative products and pulled the bloody card..

but small amounts of data corruption still kept showing up..

the creative card wasnt the root cause of the problem.. it simply turned a small problem into a big one..

without the creative on board the data coruption only occured when large amounts of data was shifted from one hardrive to another.. with the creative card onboard it happened all the time..

the root cause... my via chipset mobo.. something called a via V-link bus..

its the bus that links a via north and south bridge.. over the years via had kept speeding this bus up.. in the bios there is something called V-link mode.. a bit like hypertransport.. i swopped the setting from mode 4 to mode 3 and it instantly cured the data coruption without any performance hit..

the creative card now works okay but some things can make some other problems worse and lead u off down a false trail.. creative sound cards are well known for being one of em..

another problem with data corruption is even when u stop it happened the damage already done makes it very hard to know when the cure is found..

my method was to take a large rar and par set.. run a verify proggy on it.. fix the errors then copy it and recheck.. if something is wrong new errors will show up each time u copy the large set of rars about..

once u can copy the large (several gigs) set of rars about without new errors showing up u have fixed the problem..

mostly rar errors are put down to memory errors but in my case it was the mobo default v-mode setting..
