Days after releasing its high-end Crosshair III Formula, ASUS is readying another motherboard, this time based on AMD's new 785G + SB710 chipset. This AM2+ micro-ATX board offers a fairly standard feature-set. The AM2+ socket supports nearly every AM2, AM2+, AM3 socket CPU ever made, while the four DDR2 DIMMs support up to 1200 MHz DDR2 by overclocking, while DDR2-1066 is a standard for AM2+/AM3 CPUs. The southbridge provides five SATA II ports, with a sixth one positioned as eSATA on the rear-panel. Display connectivity options include DVI, D-Sub and HDMI. The motherboard may be released during the upcoming Computed 2009 event.

The source also revealed a bit about the AMD 785G chipset, confirming our earlier assumption that it was based on the RS880 core. The chip embeds an RV620 graphics processor, which will be named as the Radeon HD 4200 IGP. It features UVD 2.0 video hardware decoder, and supports DirectX 10.1. It also supports SidePort auxiliary memory, apart from the usual UMA. AMD notes that the IGP will be slightly faster than the RS780, while being significantly faster than Intel G45 and NVIDIA's GeForce 8200 (although NVIDIA's fasted IGP for the AMD platform is GeForce 8300).

Nice to see they will still continue making products out of the new chipsets for people who don't have the current platform.

Forgive my ignorance but is there a way to make ddr3 backwards compatible so that they could release boards that support a full upgrade from am2-am3 and ddr2-ddr3?

There already are motherboards with combo sockets that have DDR3 and DDR2 slots on the same board. With an AM3 CPU, you can use the DDR3 and DDR2 slots (one type at a time), and with AM2+/AM2 CPUs, the DDR2 slots. Here's an example: http://img.techpowerup.org/090527/bta1280.jpg

there are "2" written all other the board.

The thing that kinda knocked me off... does it even need a chipset cooler ?, look at those, so small.

When a see a 4870 and a quad in those boards ima gonna laugh, cause it's gonna look hilarious( my sense of humour)

Anyways, seems like amd is in for a good new chipset, are theese 40NM's ?

You would think so, right? That is a damn small chipset cooler for the amount of power and functionality built into it... The chip itself is impressively small too. Technically, however, if they do in fact dub it an "RV620" then it ought to be 55nm. All of this, however, begs the biggest question of all...

Why the hell can't AMD get a decent notebook platform together? This type of low-TDP, high-performance tech ought to be eating Intel for breakfast in that market, regardless of processor efficiency! They need to step it up and release their 45nm mobile dual-core chips, because there is absolutely no reason for HP and others to keep bundling their AMD products with nVidia chipsets, yet still only the lowly likes of Gateway seem to be using them... =/

Well, theese chipsets are killers, i know 790FX is a super effecient chipset aswell.

But do not forget RV740 is 40NM, they might do 40 NM ;) might not be a clocker then! but low TPD will it have!( if its 40NM)

Just to wait and see :)

Like BTA said they have released dual boards, and looks like the new chipset is releasing for AM2+ platforms so maybe see a new dual board from them. But as far as DDR3 working in DDR2 slots, even though they are the same pin count, the notch is in a different spot.
