well unfortunatly today my speedlink medusa NX headphones decided that the front left speaker doesnt want to work anymore without fiddling around with the wires for some odd reason. So what im asking is for people to recommend new gaming headsets that I can buy, prefereably 5.1 or 7.1 would be nice. And not speedlink, cause i've gone through two pairs and they're pretty rubish.

i've been looking at them but the only problem is that they're USB instead of 3.5mm jacks. I'd really like to buy them but thats the only draw back which really annoys me.

Those are nice, but I've heard mixed results overall...some complained they weren't worth the price, while many said they kicked ass. Keep in mind they are 2ch headphones that use 7.1 emulation, similar to the CMMS-3D that Stonesour's X-Fi is capable of. Many will argue that the dolby is better, but at the end of the day, many gamers continue on with the X-Fi CMMS-3D whether it's creative x-fi or not.

I see you got to read through my long post in the other thread, sorry it wasn't much help to ya. I was the same way...now my preferences have changed greatly. JVC HA-RX700's rock, for their price they blow away any gaming headset I've listened to which goes well beyond what I've owned over the years. Plus the trick is to set Windows to 5.1, set Creative Console Game Mode to Headphone output, then enable CMMS-3D, also setting the games that don't pick up that Windows is in 5.1. It really does work quite well, tbh I prefer it over my TB HPA2's for all uses including gaming and movies. One thing I do appreciate is the feeling of distance in games, even though the JVC's are closed the soundstage sound much larger than any previous open or closed headset I've ever tried, plus using the mic mod which cost a total of about 15 bucks + HPA2 Mic from TB is well worth it. Better sound, same clear mic for TS, good to go. If you really want good 5.1+ sound, I hear the Astro A40's are the ones to get if you're picky. But their price is rediculous...I'll probably never see a set of them, nor do I want a set, after listeneing to just decent cans...I'm sold that gaming headsets aren't worth the price hike. Especially with the right sound card and tools at your disposal. Hope you find what you're after, I'm interested to see what you pick up.

so I could get a 2.1 headset and then just use the CMMS-3D on my Soundcard and I could just get 5.1 emulated?

so I could get a 2.1 headset and then just use the CMMS-3D on my Soundcard and I could just get 5.1 emulated?

Yep, that's how a lot of gamers do it with headphones from what I read. I wasn't confident going from 5.1 to CMMS-3D + 2ch would work out well...but to my suprise it was better than what I was used to. Getting a decent headphone, though watch the ohm rating or you might need an amp (part of why I got the JVC HARX700's, plus they were $33 shipped). You can get better sound, then get some 3.5mm extensions or one long one, I recommend the TB HPA2 mic, as it records very clearly, it does let in some background noise, but not as bad as many others I've used from Logitech, Plantronics, LTB, etc. The mic is purchased from Turtle Beach, but the price is pretty good..I think 7.50 + around 4 shipping iirc...don't quote me though, just find the HPA2 in products then look for replacement parts on the LH menu.

Yep, but the trick as I've learned is to not synchronize your Windows and Creative sound panels. Setup windows for 5.1, setup creative for headphones or 2.1 (I prefer headphone mode though), enable cmms-3d, set the game to 5.1 or windows default, and go. Works great in CoD4, FFoW, L4D, GRiD, etc. I feel I actually can better tell where things are coming from and judge by distance if they're more of an immediate threat that my current pursuit. It's really, really impressive how they can emulate multichannel so well, so popular, many of the claimed 5.1 and 7.1 headsets out there do just that, though it's the ones that come with a USB sound card. It works, you get better sound, I now realize that fitting all those speakers in a smaller can (compared to my JVC's) is crap in comparison to a decent pair of headphones...no contest, no chance...at least with what I've experience thus far, and this is comparing $80 5.1 headset to a $33 headphone, using the same mic and sound card on both (X-Fi Xtreme Music, though being replaced with an Auzen X-Fi, has x-ram which is handy still from what I've heard, better quality, and a dedicated headphone amp for when I upgrade headphones in the future, the JVC's are easily driven by an x-fi).

Hope that helps! Remember this is just my opinion, and I used to disagree with the statement above, till I actually gave it a go...if it didn't work I was out about $40-45 bucks instead of another $50-240+ on a gaming headset that had surround/5.1 capabilities...and I ended up learning a lot and reaping the benefits. There are some other quality headphones that are converted to headsets, but generally they're again way overpriced (check out Beyerdynamics gaming headset for instance, makes the Astro A40's look cheap). Again, my 2 cents though, but I'm converted and I saved a lot of money in the end!

I can highly recommend the Turtle Beach HPA2. Real 5.1 analog connectors, excellent amp, the best speaker placement I've seen in a surround set and tremendous bass from a dedicated high-impact driver. Very sturdy and comfortable. It's also available with a USB interface if you don't have a good sound card. The 100$ they ask for these babies is nothing less than an act of generosity.

And in my opinion, don't waste your time with software-generated surround emulation and stereo headphones, you'll be greatly disappointed. I tried it with very good dt880s aswell as good dj headphones on my x-fi and it just doesn't work at all, makes everything sound not the way it was intended.

I agree, but I gotta say if you have an X-Fi card supporting CMMS-3D or similar supporting Dolby Headphone, a cheaper headphone will make better sound. I've used the TB HPA2's (had both verison one and two, one is wall plug powered, two is usb powered amp and sounds better) for nearly 2 years overall. Even hooking those up to an X-fi is massive, the Amp is a plus, the level controls, master volume all that, but my JVC's can go louder with less distortion driven soley from the same X-Fi output that's even using the HPA2 splitter still.

Everyone has different ears and expectations of sound(s), the HPA2's are good, the 5.1 is pretty decent, but my larger, closed JVC's, put out tons more accurate bass, mids and hi's, has a much larger sound stage (pretty awesome for gaming, the harx900's have an even larger sound stage from what I hear, and more bass if needed). I have a crappy cell phone picture of the HPA2's sized up against the JVC's for reference:

I thought the HPA2's were fairly large, but lol, not even close to these! Anisotonic, I agree that emulation can only go so far, but to my ears it matches with better distance/soundtage with Windows set at 5.1, creative set to headphone, cmms-3d on, it's tough to explain how that is...especially being so used to 5.1's for such a long time, I had LTB's before that (which sucked) for almost a year, going from almost 3 years on 5.1 to a regular headphone, I was expecting dissapointment...and lucked out with a good set of cans for cheap enough almost 3 pairs could be purchased for the price of the HPA2's. Trust me, I still like em, but my fiance can keep them at this point, the JVC's made that much of a difference to me.

More bass? That's hard to believe. With single-driver cans like these JVCs you can't decide to have the mid/treb at 2, the bass at 5 and have another knob to control the gain. Bass distortion levels are far beyond comfortable listening ranges on the HPA2s. I listen mostly to bass-driven music like house and DnB and if nor my dt880s or my akg 181s will match the bass of the HPA2, I don't see what hope the JVC have.

True, but that's what an EQ is for in the end it'll make a better sound change than the level controls do, at least in my experience. But yes, much more bass, you're comparing a cramped open-backed headset to a large close-back headphone, as I have learned, big difference. Just the flat sound, EQ flat, sure the TB HPA2's can sound better because you have the sub control, so less need for EQ or bass boost, but I usually ran my sub at 3-3.5-ish, 4-5 if I really wanted some thunder. Usually ran the rest around 3. Well some EQ and bass boost adjustment, it's night and day, and then I'm going Turtle wha? True the distortion levels are beyond normal listening levels, it's still there and on the rare occasion it happens can still be annoying.

I've heard dt880's have less bass than the dt770 80's, which some compare the 700's to but of course less, that's comparing $250+ headphones to $33 headphones. None-the-less, there's plenty of options and that's what I'm trying to get acroos my my POV, and to my ears the JVC's sound much better out of the same source w/o an amp...sure the EQ is much different, but the overall sound is much better, more defined, much clearer (imo), and as much bass as my x-fi can put out...which is a lot more than the HPA2's can handle at similar listening volumes...I tried recently to do a kind of comparison after a couple weeks on the JVC's. I just can't stand behind the HPA2's as strongly when a $33 headphone can actually be an upgrade to an $80-100 headest. Sure you gotta mod in a mic, I just use the HPA2 mic...same clear, crisp recording, better headphones to my ears for music, movies and gaming, win-win for me. There's some huge threads about the JVC's, part of why I got them, please refer to this thread:
http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=97395

Most notably, this post:
http://forums.techpowerup.com/showpost.php?p=1452648&postcount=67

As you can see I really stood behind my HPA2's, as I said, I've had them for years, but they just aren't a match for the JVC's to my ears. I was also expecting crap from the emulation, but it's actually quite decent, even the dolby stuff is pretty damn good, but it depends on what kind of headphone you get, and that's where things can get technical and specific, but on a budget even including extra mic and mic cables, and a couple of zip-ties, I saved a ton of money over getting another set of HPA2's for her (or myself however it would've went), and I've had a more enjoyable time listening to music and enjoying games w/the clan, while still having the same solid mic recording from the HPA2. It's a good 5.1, if someone must have a true 5.1 headset, those are what I'd recommend bar-none (see a link to a thread, I'm the 2nd or 3rd poster boasting them...it's just after the OP in this thread).

Doubt all you want, my ears aren't lying to me, but again this is my opinion from the experience I've had with both, not saying you're wrong, not saying I'm right, as it differs too much between different sets of ears and expectations tbh.

Just tried the 2.1 trick and on arma 2 everything sounded horrible. I'm too used to 5.1 now. I have to give kudos to the creative fatality, they're still pretty good for being almost 2 years old.

Anywho, when exactly in august are those Roccat headphones meant to be coming out?

Just tried the 2.1 trick and on arma 2 everything sounded horrible. I'm too used to 5.1 now. I have to give kudos to the creative fatality, they're still pretty good for being almost 2 years old.

the fatal1ty headset is ok, i bought 1 two years ago and loved the sound but after a year the mic stoppec working, bought another set, another year later the mic stopped again.... creative and i are i a love-hate releationship. i love there products but they hate me!!!! but razer on the other hand, i absolutly love there products and that why i recommend the megalodon!

but no matter what headset you get i hope you are very happy with your choice.

i've been looking at them but the only problem is that they're USB instead of 3.5mm jacks. I'd really like to buy them but thats the only draw back which really annoys me.

Mate believe they are awesome and no need for a sound card. I will never change these now

I wish there was a place where i could try out the G35's and the Razer set of headphones. I'm most likely going to wait till the Roccat Kave headphones come out and then give them a look at. Hopefully they'll get good reviews from people. They do look awesome but does anyone have any idea what the mute LED exactly does? does it change colour or something when it has been muted? I also hope that the lenght of cable to the central mangement box has enough slack on it, because I can see my self pulling it off the desk then getting dragged down by it.
