I recently replaced my ECS 780G motherboard with a nice new gigabyte one and decided to order some parts and build the old ECS one for my father. The board was working fine when i pulled it out of my rig and put it in a electrostatic bag and put it back in it's box. I pulled it out today and hooked it up, dropped a Athalon X2 kuma 7850 in it and 4 gigs of Crosair XMS2 DDR2-1066, a old ATI X1800XT 512 i had and a decent 500 watt power supply. I figured it would work fine but it did not. The first boot all the fans spun up for about 3 seconds then it all shut down. I hit the power button again and nothing happened. So i guessed the power supply was bad so i pulled it out wired up a new one and this time all the fans just nudged. Odd I pulled all the extras out of it unplugged everything except for the 24 pin and the 4 pin for the CPU. Hit the power button nothing. I even went and pulled the front off of another case and hooked up that to the I/O panel and it still would not power on. So i pulled out the CPU ect. All that i had in the case was the board. With the 24 pin and the 4 pin plugged in i hit the power button nothing still. I unplugged the 4 pin 12v CPU plug and hit the power button. Everything spun up like normal. I plugged the 4 pin back in, no power. I have never had this happen to me on any of my builds. So I'm completely dumbfounded about what could be causing this besides the motherboard just being bad all of a sudden.

Anyhelp you can give me on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Also the motherboard is a ECS A780GM-A

sounds like some odd power issue ,, if you were putting a phenom 9950(140Watt) or 9850(125Watt) i would say yeah use the 4 pin for clear power and stability ? are you looking to overclock ? cuz thats the only time your going to require the 4 pin ,, as far as i seen , AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core/ Athlon™ 64 / Sempron processor sare the best supported cpu's on this board ,, i know sombody that was using a similar board that needed 8pin onto the board for running a phenom , other wize it would restart randomly or just switch off ,, but sadly i see your mobo doesnt need it and only supports 1x4 pin ,, dude , check for any miss connections ,, RAM , or remove the mobo and check for bugs at the bottom of the board ,, i'm clueless about this one.

try with an older CPU. the BIOS may need an update to support the new CPU

my 780G has a very erratic CPU support list (many phenom chips not supported, but some AM3's are), perhaps you got unlucky with that.

Mussels hey i would sugest him a bios update , but for what reason his running a Athalon X2 kuma 7850, think thats like a 90 watt cpu,, and if the pc cant come on at all who is the bios going to be flashed ?? haha ,, we need to keep thinking ,, this one is tough, hmmm ,,, like i said check for any loose connections perhaps , remove the mobo start it on your desk with some static paper! or anti shock , to prevent any further damage , one you get it working build it back.

the only way to flash it, is to get an older, supported CPU. if he cant do it, a local PC store could.

I tried my older Athlon X2 3800+ and it dose the same thing, I also tried my Phenom X4 9850 which is what i have had in the board for over a year with 0 issues since the board supports up to 140w CPU's. The oddest thing is that it dose it no matter whether or not there is a CPU in the board. The second the 4 pin plug is plugged in the whole system shuts down. Even booting barebones with 1 stick of ram any of the CPU's and no PCI cards it will do it. The board has been sitting on a shelf for about a month and it was pulled directly out of a working rig.

try with an older CPU. the BIOS may need an update to support the new CPU

my 780G has a very erratic CPU support list (many phenom chips not supported, but some AM3's are), perhaps you got unlucky with that.

As i stated above the board fully supports any AM2-AM3 CPU up to 140w with the BIOS that i have on it.

It's a very odd issue I'm guessing that the motherboard has just magically gone bad. I looked over the full board at every circuit that i could see on the front and back and all the the caps and such, none look tanned, burned, swelled, or anything out of the ordinary. I even pulled the CPU mounting bracket off and looked under it and yet again nothing odd about it. I have tried 512 sticks of generic 533 ram, 2gig sticks of 800, and 1 gig sticks of 1066 but it seems to have the problem regardless. Also i currently have the motherboard pulled out of the case and put on my bench to cut out the possibility of the case shorting out a connection somewhere. Also this is the same motherboard that i ran Linpack on with my 9850 at 2.56ghz for 10 hours with no problems.

OH shit ,,, dude ,, please dont tell me you added volts to the cpu @ 2.56 ?? i'm running the 9850 @ 2.9 with a slight volt tweak works on 1.325V and 1.35 stable ,, OK well I have read that all the 780G chipset motherboards can not run a 125 Watt TDP cpu if you did add volts running the 9850 , with out the 4 pin you might have screwd up your RVm's or voltage regulators , what i'v found online is
but if you say you did flash to a new bios ,, mabye your board got screwd threw sum1 els while it was standing mabye sum1 touched it or sumthing ,, this is unusuall, one of those misterious things that happen with computers . also all the reviews i'v seen show
also if you check here at the actual web page ,, they indicate a supported cpu list ,

http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Support/CPU_Support_Model.aspx?detailid=866&MenuID=69&LanID=0 ,, a phenom 9850 will run @ 95 Watt but if you oc even 2-5% it draws 140 watt ,, and also my cpu @ 2.9 ( the 9850 on a m3a32-mvp) draws 238 watt says sisoftsandra,, but dude ,, nobody knows for sure , like i said its a mistery !!

* what i dont understand is why they manufacture says the phenom 9850 is 95 watt ,, when its 125 Watt and said so .

but i'm lost !! haha

Well no at 2.56 i had the voltage at 1.2 instead of the stock 1.3. I have overvolted but that was over a year ago when i first got the board and tired to get some nice numbers out of it. When i first got the board it would not support my phenom it would just shutoff on boot. I updated the BIOS and everything was peachy. I recently updated the BIOS to try out my friend AM3 CPU in it to see if it was worth getting and it worked fine. The CPU that i tried in it was the AMD Phenom II X4 945 at stock clocks. I also was running the computer since i bought it with the 4pin plug in it just fine. The entire board was running 100% fine before i tried to use it again yesterday but when i pulled it out of the working rig it went strait into a bag then back into it's box so i don't see how it could have gotten damaged.

Also if this helps make any sense of it the BIOS version that is on the board is the 09/05/19 bios that add's support for Phenom II X945 X545 Z550,Athlon II 600E,605E,400E,405E,245,250

Thanks for your help. I guess i will attempt to deal with ECS's horrible support and get a RMA on it since it apprently had a "36 Month Warrany" on parts XD

Try sticking a different CPU in it. It is possible the CPU is bad for some reason, unlikely but possible.
