Cooler Master V8

Hey guys. I recently got my new system listed in my specs, but I've run into a problem with my CPU cooler. Unless I'm unaware of the thermal specs of this CPU, it's getting way too hot using the Zalman, around 60*C on load. I tried reseating, but still the same. I'm using the cooler than came with it and it sits around 40*C idle and hits 55*C on load, which is what I'm used to seeing. I'm looking for a new cooler though, and was considering the V8. How is it? Would it be enough for some mild OC'ing? Or, what cooler would be best for me? I REALLY don't want to spend over $60. FYI, ambient temps are around 80*F to 85*F in my room.

The CNPS 9500 is way too small for a quad.

The V8 should cover you just fine.
However you could also look at the Prolimatech Megahalems and the Noctua NH-U12P which are also two great solutions. These 3 are on the top so either one will be more than enough.

The S1283 is an instant thought, however those new Prolimatech coolers are amazing. Maybe even the Corsair H50 Watercooling system? Thats £53 over here and tames even i7 processors with mild overclocks.

No, they have a variety that range from $20 to $70. The ones in the $40 range the ones most people talk about.

Oh ok well thanks for that then. Seems the Prolimatech is $65 on FrozenCPU. Not too bad for such a beast! One other concern/question I have is this: given the fact that my PC is stationary, is there any risk to having such heavy coolers?

I wouldn't recommend bumping or moving the case a lot with a heavy cooler. I'm surprised my motherboard hasn't warped with this 4+ pound hunk of copper on it.

Well I know that lol, I was just asking if there are still problems with heavy heat sinks if it just sits in one spot, only being moved occasionally to be cleaned.

Like he said. If you move or take your computer with you somewhere. i recommend laying the computer on its side with the top of the cooler facing up. This will make sure the weight is pulling downwards while you travel.

I also keep some of the foam from my PSU box and cut it fit between my cooler and PSU. And another to fit between the GPU and cooler. This helps make sure it doesn't wobble from side to side when I am drive down the highway to visit family.

Treat your PC like a trust worthy girlfriend. Give her respect, love, and comfy ride when traveling.

Just for my own knowledge, are the new Zalmans, like the 9900 and 10x Extreme worth it?

Bump. The V8 is really tempting....I have read several reviews that show it performs very well. I'd still like to make the best choice though. So far, the votes are:
Cooler Master V8
Xigmatek S1283
Noctua NH-U12P
The Prolimatech is a bit too much. I was hoping for $60 or less shipped. I know you guys know your coolers. So please, any more bit of advice is greatly appreciated.

Xiggy, why?

Price; $26 after MIR.

That cooler plus 2 quality 120mm fans will cool pretty much anything....your 955 would be happy under there. But, you could also look at the HDT1284 as it has another heat pipe and supposed to be better at cooling quads than the xx23.

Just my 2 cents...The Scythe Mugen 2...cools amazingly well, fairly inexpensive, and best of all it mounts in all orientations...IIRC the Xiggy and Noctua only mount in the up/down orientation on an AMD rig...I prefer the front/back orientation...but that is just my 2 cents...

Hm, I didn't think about the orientation issue. I don't like mine facing up either. I know I have the Antec 900 with the large fan in the top, but my airflow goes out the back with a beastly Scythe Ultra Kaze pulling most of the air. I'll look at the one you suggested.

Here are temps of my 940 @ 3600 running 1.42v...The load temps are NOT running OCCT...just a few 3dmark06 runs, but 47c after 4 3DMark06 runs isnt bad I don't think. Good luck...

Not bad at all! I just want something that will let me OC a good bit, for benchmarking. I also want something that won't break the bank, or my board for that matter!
