ive been running around in circles buying new parts for my system, trying to cool this video video card down hears the parts i bought

coolermater v8
http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=020836&cid=FAN.349

Scythe "MUSASHI" Twin-Fan VGA Cooler
http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/vga/002/scvms1000_detail.html

zalman gv-1000
http://www.zalman.co.kr/Eng/product/Product_Read.asp?idx=283

after playing gta 4 for over a hour, i get crazy artifacts, i tested this card with both coolers in my second test rig, all temps seem to good 10c cooler

with zalman gv -1000 44c idle 60c load
Scythe MUSASHI 42 idle 59 load

my second test rig
with zalman gv -1000 39c idle 56c load
Scythe MUSASHI 38c idle 53c load

its not the gpu temps i am worried about i know there passable, its the top right side of the card that's super burning hot 100c i can only put my hand on the card for no more then 1 sec or ill burn myself i have heatsinks trough out the card top to bottom even on the vrms my test rig is is warm to hot which seems normal to me

to let u know i have a few problems with my Asus M4A79 that i to have rma it this monday for advanced replacement, asus tech support says my south bride chip is dieing that's why my onboard lan and pci slots are giving me issues, so maybe that's why this card runs hot

any ideas guys

How is the airflow setup in your rig? If the GPU cooler fan can only push warm air over the card, because there is no supply of fresh, colder air its no wonder the card slowly overheats.

did a lot of changes to case flow the past few days, 2 top front 80mm fans i disconnected them cause they were turn the wrong way sucking hot air from center of motherboard out the front of case, i have one lower front 80mm fan sucking old cold air in to cool down hard drives, added 120mm fan right on top of video card, bought a 120mm fan that's 3000rpm, to replace my old 120mm fan that's on top of video card, temps seem to be the same, card is toasty hot around the vrms of the card, i don't know what to do now, maybe my card is on its way out, actually i have another 8800gt same card pretty much by evga doing the same, both cards never overheated this bad, even with stock coolers, i mean the gpu core always got hot but no big deal, again its the top right half of the card that's boiling, its gets worse one of my 8800gt's the warranty ran out, i didn't register the card before the 90 days when i first bought it, then second card is still covered under warranty, what should i do guys, buy i new video card, or keep using it tell its death, but if i do that, i am at risk damaging other components in system, really dont wanna buy a new card, when this 8800gt runs fast enough for every single game i have, even gta 4 i avg 65 fps

Well your card is already heavily overclocked and it's putting strain on the VRMs. Did you sink them? Did you sink the memory? Got a picture of the card/case with everything installed?

My first guess would be that memory causes the artifacts, after the whole card heats up. Most likely some of the chips that are close to the VRMs.

Downclock memory to 900MHz and try then.

Ah, not that crazy clocks then. Googled that SSC card and it came out with 700 core and 1000 for memory. My 8800gt was 650/1625/900 and didn't have any problems. I did sink the memory and VRMs though, as they weren't on stock.

And for the card dying part, if you are ok with it it shouldn't cause any problems with rest of the system. Most that will happen is that you'll get constant artifacts on the screen. For the moment it might be best to take a break when you get artifacts, good for you and the card :)

lol good call Onboard, anyways i figure it out, i used gpu-z riva tuner, then ran furmark, i can run furmark as long as i like now, and i can actually put my hand on the card without burning myself, so even though i got this solved, its only obvious that something is physically wrong with the card

a pict of the inside of the comp would help.
I got rid of my new 4870s just for that reason, even with heatinks on the back side of the card they radiated a lot of heat.(not 100s though)

Thanks for posting the temps with the different coolers.

The Sapphire Vapor X cooler was by far the best cooler (better temps than you got with ur 8800 and Zalman). But it did nothing to cool the memory on the back side (thats where the heat was)

To keep them cool they should have a fan blowing along the back side nd an exit for the heat to escape through)
Make sure to remove the slot covers

(38-45C)That is what the 4870 with VaporX was on my comp (all I did was use MX2 on it)

I tried Battle axe coolers (sucked) and acceleros (the smaller 2 heat pipe version is better on 9600 and smaller cards) and the Zalman 900 (not too good either) on my 9800GTs. I almost got the Zalman 1000s but they seemed a bit $$ for poor old me. After watching this thread yuo saved me a bunch of extra $ so thanks:respect:

Thats pretty cool that they are sending you replacement screws.

no doubt i was happy about that, yeah i heard those sapphire vapor-x cards are top notch, but its not wroth the extra money, i rather pick up 2 cheap stock hd 4870's, and toss my coolers on them hehe

LOL, I paid $209 each for them (they are like $150 now). You already have the extra coolers so yes its definately worth it for you to get the cheap cards.
Lucky for me Tzi was nice enough to send me his old coolers to test (Toxic heatpipe ones) all the way from Greece to compare and turns out they sucked (like 5C warmer than the VaporX coolers)

Thanks for the tip on the Scythe cooler.
