IF I was thinking of replacing the cooling anyway. A ton more noob friendly to put on a aftermarket cooler, versus disassembling the stock behemoth.

Other than that I would pass if I planned to use it as-is.

That coolers alot bigger than this one and is full coverage. Also I cannot find the core speed or memory sped anyplace either. Even assuming it has the same clock speed and 24 less shaders I would take it's cooler over the crap on this 260 gtx.

Why is the debate ridiculous and based in hypothetical? It based off a comparison with a much cooler running card from the same company using a smaller gpu with a high failure rate? That's a fair comparison and this cards a mistake with that cooler but that just how I see it.

The pcb layout is a different design from OEM and doesn't need to be cooled where the OEM part does. If the card would be burning up within a weeks time Asus would not sell it. Either way, it's useless arguing over it until we see the flood of returns from the card where I will admit I was mistaken.

I have to say I don't even fully believe some of those reviews when they claim the card is loud. I know it's all relative but I have two 9600GSO's folding together in the same rig with the Glaciator heatsinks and they are not loud by a long shot. I have both of them overclocked to 1782 shader speed which is pretty damn respectable for a 96 shader count 9600. With the coolers lapped and MX-2 applied they run wonderfully. Overclocked, fully loaded, and running 511 pointers all day without a hitch. I can see with a system with poor airflow they will be cooking..... but the same goes with most 260's and poor airflow systems.

He was commenting on how loud the cooler is compared to the stock GSO heatsink. Not anything comparing about the gpu's saying that the Glaciator fansink is quieter than those on the GSO.

One other thing I'd like to point out to you, post 19 you state something along the lines of 70° being really hot? I can run my GTX260 all day long at ~80° and it doesn't skip a beat. Also air being exhausted out the back is pretty nice, won't effect cpu temp as much.

There's a chance that it make use of Stack Cooling, or they are just expecting air from fans to keep it reasonable at stock speed.

The vrms are likely different than the reference design, and either don't run as hot, or can handle higher heat loads.

And I'll say this again, Asus wouldn't sell it if they didn't already test it at these clocks with that cooling. Sure, it may not be the best cooler you could put on the card, but all it has to do is keep the card below critical temps at the clocks it's advertised with. Nothing more, nothing less.

I didn't write that a reviewer did. and the cooler we are discussing leaves the air in the case.

This card won't last long... the HD4850s from Rev1 had very high failure rates because of the lack of cooling they gave... (The cooler itself died, the card held firm)... however, the failure rates were cooling related and not reported as a "failed HD4850" so the reliability rate for the HD4850s stayed high.
