We're in the same boat... chasing good money after bad isn't a good idea... you'd even get a good boost to a 5770 from your current card.

I'm personally holding off for a 58xx card.

Sell your 4870 and buy a card with 1gb or vram. 5850 would be a good choice. I say this because of the resolution you game at.

I had two 4850 512s and found I needed more VRAM for 1920x1200 (can monitor with RivaTuner, at least under XP). So I got a 4870 1GB and really did notice a difference in many games. It just "ran better". So I do not suggest you get another 4870 512, though your experience may differ esp based on what games you play. I love high-res textures and eye candy.

Edit: Damn you erocker! :D

I would think 1900x1200 would kill a 5770 due to the 128-bit limit of the ram. I would hold off and get a 58xx series card if that's the res you want to play at.

yeah get a 5850 because its lower power than crossfire but will perform kinda near 4870 crossfire? i think because a 5870 is like a 4870x2

Yeah for me the power consumption for the 5K series is reason enough to want them. Let alone DX11 support! Plus if you sell your 4870 it shouldn't cost too much more to buy a 5850 rather than buying another 4870. If you really want to upgrade that's what I would do!

But for me the 4870 still does the job! I just like the new 5770's because they only need 1x 6-pin PCI-E power jack and use WAY less power on idle!

Nah, I would sell the 4870 and get a 4890. That will easily hold you off at 19x12 res for a while.

If you had a 1GB 4870, then I'd say get a second. Since it's only 512, I'd sell it and put that money towards a 5770, 5850, or 5870.

i dont think thats a serious problem. there is an article in tomshardware in which test a 4870 512mb, a 1gb and a 2gb model at differnt res and 512mb was enough till 2500x1600

4870's are by no means "junk". I get completely playable frames in ANY game I've ever tried at 1920x1080 with maxed out setting and AA (except Crysis, but that doesn't count). They scale extremely well and dominate when it comes to performance for the price for single cards and crossfire. As you can see in this review the 4870 beats the 5770 in almost every game. This one is a great deal.

Correct me if I'm wrong but 4870 beats 5770 in DX9/DX10 performance does it not? It just sucks back much more power to do so!

Either way if the guy wants to "upgrade" I don't think he sound get a 4890 or 5770. If he really wants to upgrade he should just get the 5850! If he doesn't really want to upgrade he should probably wait a little bit.

Yep, I agree about a 5850, that's why I put it in bold in my post earlier. I'd wait a little while though, they went up in price recently.

the 4890 is not worth upgrading too its a power hog and its not not going to gie much more frames

the 5770 is a bit more than a 4870 or at least on par but with less power consumption, so you need to think about the 5850 but wait for prices to get a bit better

the 4870 can hold till prices drop a tiny bit
