Is an SSD/Velociraptor any use in such system?

Hello there,
I am building a system for my friend. He needs it fast for everyday use, he is not gaming, just surfing the web, using skype, watching videos, there is a mild use of Photoshop.

So far I am with:
Athlon II X4 620
Asus M4A785T-M
4 GB DDR3 1333 CL9

So the question is:
is there any point in buying an SSD/Velociraptor as the system disk (for the Windows, programs) or he could just go with a usual HDD?

Thanks in advance.

A regular hd is fine. He'd also be fine with a dual core and 2 gigs of ram

yes. but ssd is quite expensive, and velociraptor really isnt that much faster for the money.

Go with an ssd if he doesnt need more than say 32GB of storage.

So if I used a 32 GB SSD, there would be a performance boost?

Given its a good quality one. only issue is something like this costs $200+ i believe. for $100 u can get 1TB HDD

32Gb isnt that much anymore. install vista on it. half of that is gone.

^ I agree ^ A good Caviar Black is just fine. I am not impressed with my Velociraptors or ssd's except for PCMark05...;)

Well honestly, the VRaptors are now several years old. The new drives released this year can actually out perform the VRaptors. They are honestly not worth the money when a 7200 RPM, 1 TB drive can out perform it. There is honestly no reason to buy a VRaptor any more.

Like above get a WD Caviar Black, Sammy F3, or Seagate .12. A SSD would be a waste of money.

Sideport memory will give the IGP a 10% to 15% boost in performance. So if it is the same IGP and one has sideport memory, get the sideport memory.

Also get the 4 GB of RAM, since he uses Photoshop enoug to mention it. Photo editing uses a lot of memory and he will need it.

I'd suggest a nice 32GB SSD just as a boot drive nothing else if he wants a fast everyday PC. Boot times are alot quicker, compared to a V-Raptor and also a 7200.12 which is on par with a WD Black.
(Ive owned all except wd black)

With a SSD power up and 30-40secs later youll have IE up and running:rockout:
Its well worth it IMO.

Isn't that kinda slow for an SSD? Not trying to start anything, but I though cold boot times (off to Internet) are suppose to be like 18 to 22 seconds? My computer cold boots in 37 seconds and my primary drive is like 2.5 years old.

I started a boot time thread a few months ago, fastest up there was like 35sec and the average was over 60sec, some were even in the 100sec.

Maybe you have an optimal setup IDK:confused:

EDIT: heres the link to the thread
You have a really fast system dude:rockout:

Well I monkey with a lot of stuff. I don't let my computer auto start any programs, except Anti-virus, I use boot sector defraging and ordering tool, and honestly when I get Opera up, some back ground stuff is still going on. For the first 15 seconds or so, it is really slow, but working.

I read the thread and I didn't know Everest had a reboot test, but that is different. Cold boots, warm boots, reboots, etc. are all different and will give you different times.

How did you test your rigs boot time?

And here is an interesting article at Tomshardware.com. It is three generations of HDD to show how they have improved. You would be surprised to see where the VRaptor falls now.

Theres a link in the thread, its a little program that you start and it will restart your pc, when it restarts to your desktop it will show you how many seconds it took.

IT Seems like those drives bench alot better than the VRaptor , but real world performance would be a different story, the access times make a huge difference , thats why I see it like this SSD's>VRaptors>F3-WD Black-7200.12etc.

I say skip ssd and Velociraptors for an internet/photoshop machine. Not really worth it on an average user's machine. Grab 2 1TB Samsung F1/F3's or WD Blacks and set the second drive for the Photoshop scratch disk, as well as for the pagefile, and then use the remaining space on it for back-ups. Make sure he sets up an automated backup routine. That's much more important for a non-power user to have.

Stick with 4GB of ram, and get the sideport memory.

But throughput will make a difference as well. It may take a little bit longer to locate the data, but the F3 and new Black will read/write faster. I mean, I wish I could say for certain, but I don't have access to either of these drives to test them myself.

Regardless, the point is still the same. SSD for web surfing, Skype, and some Photoshop is a colossal waste of funds. Get a nice new HDD or a VRaptor and use the extra money for something else like a bigger monitor or entry level GPU.

An SSD literally brings your whole computer to life. My Windows 7 Ultimate with my mediocore T3400 CPU loads in just 16 seconds, including BIOS. It is the MOST noticeable difference a typical user can notice.

Sure you can enlarge one's e-peen with more Ghz and cores, but ultimately the user will notice everything loading faster.
