Hi guys. I just got a brand new old stuff wire that on one side you have the plug to put in the COM port on the back panel of a motherboard and other side the rj-45 LAN plug. Do you know how to configure that and will it be on 10mbps or 100mbps ???

I knowe I know before you say... 15$ maximum for an ethernet PCI card but for really old computer that nothing was onboad and you had to put PCI sound, video and others it could be useful. I used to repair old computers but never seen that.

Need some help boys. Thanks

I doubt it can even do 100mbps as it's most likely too old. Hook it up and try it out.

what are you trying to find out? you've given a vague description of some kind of cable, with no direct questions

RJ-45 <> COM most likely is to configure routers, switches, disk cabinets and the likes. I know at least some PIX routers that use this type of cable.

Ok so its an old useless stuff for todays routers and other equipment cause you can configure them using the rj45 itself

If we're talking about the same thing then yes, though it's not like they're not used anymore. They're just not used in simple home equipment.

Also, if you are talking about COM/Serial ports I think you are talking of speeds in Kilobits rather than Megabits but I could be mistaken.

It's used for connecting terminals to routers for configuration. We have plenty of those for our company's Cisco routers. Cisco doesn't use them exclusively, though

Yes i saw that at my last work we had a cisco dark purplu box with a sqare for RJ45 called Console. But why use that port instead of using directly the IP adress like for example when you connect over the lan by using 192.168.0.1 for example ?

its cisco. they love to be weird.

It would prevent hacking, for a more logical answer.

For another, if it was a managed switch it wouldnt have an IP address - it'd be transparent to the network, and therefore would require some other kind of interface to connect to it.

There was the principal "modem" pluged into the wall for ISP , then after plugin into the cisco box, then after in a d-link hub because one computer was the main database and all of them needed that computer to plug into internet. Sharing the net and the database of that main computer...then other wires coming out of the hub for the printer.
