I am stable @ 4ghz w/ no HT, but w/ HT on, I eventually get freezing or BSOD. I dont know why... which voltages or settings are off? Itried raising a few voltages (cpu, ioh, ich, ioh csi) a few notches, but still no dice.

BLCK: 191
PCI-E: 100

CPU Ratio: 21 (speedstep on)
QPI: just under 7, cant remember. its the lowest setting
Uncore: 30xx (twice the dram)
DRAM: 158xmhz

Without Vdrop
CPU Voltage: 1.275v (1.248 in windows)
DRAM Voltage: 1.65( probably can go lower, havent tested)
IOH Voltage: 1.1 (default)
VTT Voltage: 1.410v
ICH Voltage: 1.1v (default)
IOH/CSI Voltage: 1.16v (default)
IOH/ICH PCI-E Voltage: 1.56 (default)
CPU PLL: 1.86v (default)

What BSOD code are you getting?
What are you using to stress with?
How fast is the stress failing or BSOD?

about 2 minutes into Linx @ 25000 problem size screen goes blue or freezes. I dont even get an error message. its just acompletely blue screen... It runs fine @ 4ghz w/ no HT sofar though... I have only done 5 Passes on linx. I'll try 20 later and i'm sure it'll probably pass.

Try raising your cpu voltage more. Say 1.3
And raise your ioh and ich voltage up .1

i tried that already and it didnt work. There is IOH, and IOH CSI. Not sure what IOH CSI is in all the guidelines/tutorials. I guess if there arent any specific reccomendations, I can just crank everything up really high, and bring it down till i start getting BSODs.. but that will take a lot of time :(

I can find recomended max voltages on air, and then bring things down till i get bsods... Thx for the comment Asylum. any other suggestions?

What do you have your memory divider set at and what speeds are they running?
Heres my 4.2 settings.

I don't think it has anything to do with the memory. He's fine with HT off, but when he turns HT on, it craps out. This leads me to believe that the CPU may need a little extra kick in the ass since the cores get stressed more with HT on.

Try increacing the voltage a little, if temps allow.

i put my system under stress using linx, and and Everest shows

DRAM FSB ratio: 4:1
Real clock: 765mhz (DDR)
Effective Clock: 1530mhz

And I run @ reccomended timings by factory.

I'll try some of those settings posted above.

How many GFlops are you getting with it off?

If linX fails with in the first 10 minutes or BSOD it usually is vcore. I would set it to 1.375 in bios and see if that helps.

Do you know what your temps are light right now?

ever since i updated my bios from 1.6 to 1.7, my pc shuts down on itself if voltages stay above 81c for too long, so I dont think I can run 3.75 and test w/ Linx unless i flash back to 1.6. Also, I have gone back to trying to get 3.78 w/ ht. I think @ 4, i saw around 50gflops. but sometimes it'd show only 33 on some runs. Not sure if that was because I had stuff running in the background, instability, or what.

before, @ 4ghz w/ ht, the hottest core was at 43c and lowest at 36c w/ the case open and all fans on high @ idle

83c is crazy... maybe you should consider leaving it at 3.8. That seems to be the sweet spot with most i7s. You should be able to get it to run at 3.8 with 1.1-1.25v

It's the heat the HT brings. You need more cooling or less OC.

Turn Turbo/SpeedStep off so you have a multiplier of 20, then use 200 BLCK. Up the vcore by small increments until it is stable. For 100% stability, run a linpack (LinX, Intel Burn Test) test at least 20 passes. If it keeps on crashing up to 1.35vcore+, don't forget about adding some VTT/QPI voltage and/or adjust memory timings.

Like rickss69 said, HT creates more heat due to the extra threads being enabled. Hitting 80C+ is common when linpack and prime95 testing since all cores and threads are being utilized so you will see high temps. My personal max temp is 82C. I consider that to be "the temperature wall". If I'm hitting 82C, its time to lower the overclock or invest in better cooling. Also, don't forget about the NB temperatures. Letting the NB get to hot during stress testing will cause instability in itself, so keep that cool while you're beating the shit out of the CPU when stressing. :)

It could be heat, it could be need for more voltage in vcore, VTT/QPI, IOH and ICH. A hint that you might need IOH and ICH voltage is if you're HD(s) don't get detected during boot up (at random times), which can also cause BSOD's from my experience.

Good luck. :)

Run memtest+86 first for a few hours or overnight if it passes kick your cpu vcore up 1.4v lower uncore vtt 1.35 leave memory volts where they are at and leave cpu options ALL on. You are nowhere near having to worry about turning any of the CPU options off exept for heat output(HT) and most importantly better cooling. Might wana give your + sqews(cpu, qpi) more time to go around the block your bios for an ASUS has this option.

And for kicks save your current bios then go in and manualy change "everything" back to auto to see what ASUS enginered into the board if its a no go-only adj vcore to 1.45 "absolute" not offset. Hidden programing in your board will compensate and "auto-adjust" with ALL cpu options ON exept a20 is off

I have had a similar issue to what you are describing. Mine sometimes fails, sometimes locks, and sometimes passes. Might be close on vcore, but I will try to up it a little more on your suggestion here.

To OP, I also find vcore and cooling (CPU, NB and vreg) to be common sources of instability. I recommend you find someone else who has used your board (perhaps motherboard reviewer, etc) and see what settings they used. Keep an eye on temps through, as they can often cause the instability when pushing voltages.

I think VTT voltage is too high! try lowering it, you shouldnt need that much for 4gig, often with i7 there is as much a dislike for overvolting than there is undervolting, I know we have different mainboards but I only need 1.325v VTT for 4.2gig.
