I was just wondering why there is such a difference in price on the same videocard but different company!

For the example the Saphire is considerably cheaper than the Asus version. Is it just down to brand name and maybe the warranty or is there more to it?

Also, if I was to upgrade from a 4870 to a 5850/5870 would I need to upgrade my PSU from the Corsair 620?

Thanks

just different brands charging different ammounts. EVGA, ASUS and XFX tend to be the most expensive brands. (EVGA Nvidia only of course).

And about the power supply, Id say no, bearing in mind that unit will probably kick out 700W+ so you'll be covered easily.

Thanks for that! Perhaps I would be wise to go for Sapphire here!

PS. Cool avatar, I was thinking of watching that film today!

Currently all 5870s are the same. get whatever price fits your budget, just keep in mind that price sometimes reflects warranty support(in the case of XFX).

Get the HIS (hint, hint). Your Corsair 620 will be fine.

I t believe it's like you say warranty. For example Sapphire 1y, ASUS 3y, XFX Double Lifetime with XFX being the most expensive typically.

Why that particular one?

Why not? If the only discernible difference is gpu bin between brands why not get the cheapest one? Unless you want to pay £50-£70 more for an extra year of warranty?

XFX double lifetime warranty only applies in the USA and Canada. Source

Well I heard the Asus 5850/5870 were pretty good but they are more pricey!

After getting the XFX XXX edition, and hearing a lot about other brands, I'd be inclined to get a cheaper one. Afaik, the only diff between the brands are the BIOS. The XFX has higher default clocks, and the ASUS allows software overclocks above CCC limits.

Iv'e had the XFX torn apart and the memory is no different than the chips in W1zz's review. The XFX XXX default clocks are 875/1300, as opposed to 850/1200... but it seems like almost all will hit 1Ghz using MSI Afterburner. Sure XFX has the "double lifetime warrantee", but I've heard that is shakey in some cases, like when they discontinue a product, you're screwed.

Regarding the PSU, look at my specs. My PC is plugged into a Kill-A-Watt and I've never seent draw over 420watts, ever. You'll be fine the way you are. :)

Sapphire's warranty has always been 2 years, unless somethings changed that I haven't heard about:confused:

Nope. They may tweak the bios to use their overclocking program, etc but they are essentially the same cards. Besides, the newer version of MSI Afterburner is no longer prohibited to just MSI like Asus's overclocking program. Man, the hoops people would jump to get the program to work on the 4800 series back in the day!

Now I am talking about reference boards not modified boards.

Sapphire and His both have 2 year warranties. The Asus has a 3 year warranty but costs considerably more.

I have had
XFX, HIS, Visiontek, Diamond and HIS and XFX are my favorite, GREAT customer service with HIS, they never asked what happened to my 3870's and XFX double lifetime is awesome for that reason. Visiontek has SLOOOWWW RMA's i send in a 4870x2 over a month ago and still haven't gotten it back.

Since there's hardly any DX11 titles out yet and a 4870 is easily up to playing the current crop of console ports I don't really see the point, especially at the price the 5870's go for due to the lack of competition. Why not wait till the next generation rumoured to appear in the second half of the year? Who knows, maybe Nvidia will have joined the fray by then which will help drive prices down too...

Your money, your choice. Are you rich?

If you have it to spend then get the 5870. If not and you prefer to use that extra money on something else get the 5850 and overclock that.
