I just recently upgraded my pc, but I ran into a problem, my processor seems to be overheating when I play games or use something like prime95. I'm using the stock heatsink and the thermal pad that came with it, at idle my temps are 38-40c and at load it goes up to 65-70c it might even go higher than that, but I never let it. The only thing I can think of that might be wrong is the heatsink or thermal pad, I don't think it's the airflow in the case because everything else's temp is normal. I'm thinking about buying a new heatsink and AC5, but I'd like to see if I can get my temps lower with what I have now. I would assume my processor shouldn't heat up this much just for simply getting into a game and playing for a short amount of time.

Also, I don't know if I pulled the latch down on the heatsink, if I didn't would this affect my temps? The heatsink feels firmly attached, but the latch may not be pulled down.

Another weird thing is that when my pc goes into sleep mode or when it turns off the display(don't know which one it is) my temps go up to 55c.

System:
OS: Windows 7 64-bit
PSU: OCZ Modxstream Pro 700w
Mobo: Gigabyte MA785G-UD3H
Memory: G.Skill 4GB DDR2 800
GFX: Sapphire 5770 1GB
Processor: Phenom II 955 3.2Ghz

Take the heatsink back off and use some AS5 or MX2/3 or some thermal paste thats better than a thermal pad. a stock AMD heatsink is pretty good design. I had one on a 5400+ BE and it overclocked to 3.5ghz with that fan under safe temps.

make sure the latch is full locked down

Depends on which heatsink he's referring to, the one with the copper base & heatpipes or the crappy aluminum one.

Either way, if you're not overclocking just buy some new thermal paste and you're good to go, there's no need to waste money on a heatsink right this moment. Oh and yeah, make sure that the heatsink is mounted properly.

whats your temperature in your house, also it could be the motherboard or CPU being bad, id reset your bios settings and then set them properly, also Id shoot the CPU with a Temp gun to see if temps are reading normally on the motherboard or not.

Yea i forgot about this. if this is the solid aluminum one with no heat pipes then i recommend getting a aftermarket heatsink. I had the OEM AMD heatsink with the 3 heatpipes

This is the one i had

It's the copper one.

My temperature in my house is around 60-70f, and I don't have any tool to manually check the processor's temp.

New paste should help. Also, try lubing your fan, it might be in need of some lubricant.

65 to 70 degrees Celsius aren't overheating, CPU are overheated if they get 100'c (or 200F) and more.

and all motherboards who sale on the market today are equipped with thermal sensor, and automatically shutdown entire system if CPU has been overheated.

but i recommend you to change your heatsink to the better ones than stock cooling.

Well from what I've read the max temperature for a 955 is 62c.

I'm going to get a new heatsink, AS5, and a new case.

Also is there any way to tell what's the temp limit on the cpu before it shuts down?

if you using "AWARD BIOS" usually there's a menu under "HARDWARE MONITORING" on your bios, it's read "Automatically shutdown if temperature higher than ..... 'C / .....'F (you can adjust)

but, even you turn off this option, mostly today motherboard will shutdown itself if CPU Temp are more than 100'c

What fans do you have in your case already? it does sound like you could do with a better cooler for the CPU but if you have lack of cooling in and around your case there wouldn't be much point, I noticed your case come's with 1 x 120mm rear fan, is that all you have in, 1 more at the front will probably knock your temps down a few more degree's.

As for your choice of cooler, if you don't mind splashing out then sure go for it :) but here's what I come across on another forum

"These are my overclocking results with a Phenom II 940.

Freq - Clock - Multi - Volt - Idle - Load
- 3800 - 206 - 18.5 - 1.4375 - 41 - 52
- 3700 - 206 - 18 - - 1.4375 - 41 - 52
- 3600 - 206 - 17.5 - 1.4125 - 40 - 51
- 3500 - 206 - 17 - - 1.3500 - 38 - 47
- 3400 - 206 - 16.5 - 1.3250 - 36 - 46
- 3200 - 200 - 16 - - 1.2875 - 35 - 44
- 3000 - 200 - 15 - - 1.2500 - 35 - 43
- 2800 - 200 - 14 - - 1.2125 - 34 - 42

I used a Xigmatek HDT-RS1283 with Arctic Silver 5, and put a small line of TIM on each exposed heatpipe. I'm using a custom Cooler Master fan with the Xiggy heatsink, works marvelously. This is in a Xigmatek Midgard W case, the cooler is blowing up towards two exhaust fans. All frequencies were tested with Prime95 for 30 minutes to an hour..."

The Xigmatek is a great cooler, and I was quite surprised to see that it does the job on AM3 chips

I have 2 fans in the pc right now, the rear fan and a 80mm on the side, I don't think it's the air flow in the case, because I took the side panel off and put a pretty big fan blowing in it, and my temps didn't change at all.

I'm still going to get a new case though, because this one is just too small.

I wasn't saying it is the lack of air flow in your case causing the problem, I was just stating that it does help with the correct air flow, as for having taking the side panel off and using a more powerful fan doesn't always help, infact it can cause even more bizarre temperature changes, not for the good either. due to air fighting against itself in the wrong places.

If you want to be like everyone else, get the Antec.

If you want a cool different looking than most rig, then get one of the other too, also, make sure to take a look at Raidmax cases or Lian Li.

I've come across someone with the XCLIO case, great case for cooling but lack of cable management makes it hard to get the perfect airflow, although as i said this case apparently has great cooling so the lack of cable management is a minor issue, unless you have long cables and know for a fact it's going to look messy and your not wanting it to. Also there is no top exhaust fan on this model (the model above has the fan on the top) unlike the Antec & Cooler Master you selected, and mentioning the top, that is also where your PSU will sit (unlike the Antec & Cooler Master) and that's not so popular with some...

The Antec... enough said really don't you think :) but as Radical_Edward was getting at if you mind having a case that you know is very popular with others aswel, then this isn't the case for you.

I don't know much about the Cooler Master, it has a lot less reviews than Antec and the XCLIO listed on Newegg, but it's a great looking case don't you think? it pretty much offers the same cooling as the Antec but unlike the Antec it has side loading HDD bay's for easy access also the feature colour for this case is black and red (LED fan/s) which in my opinion is much better than the very common blue we see everywhere.

I hope I've helped you make your choice a littler clearer for yourself.

Okay, so I made up my mind, I'm going with the HAF 922, and I'm gonna get the coolermaster hyper 212 plus instead of that zalman. I've been reading some great things about the hyper 212.

Looks a great choice on both part's of your decision's :D

If you don't mind once you get everything up and running in the case would you post here with the results for the temperatures, It's a great looking case you've picked and very tempted to get one myself, but I refuse to get one unless it offers some kind of improvement from my current case (besdies the side loading HDD bays that mine doesnt have).

Case Coolermaster HAF 922
Power Supply OCZ Modxstream 700w
So I just got my new case, and HSF. My temps are now at 28c idle, and around 56-58c load.
I'm still a little worried about the load temp, maybe it'll drop when AS5 cures.
