The story looks like this - I want to upgrade my graphics card to a HD5850 and i have a 450W PSU Chieftec, i will get a better PSU (maybe a 750W) with my next salary. I was looking at the Wizzards review of the HD5850 and saw that the card have almost the same power consumption as my HD4850. The big question is will my PSU handle the HD5850 until i buy the new PSU because i dont want to wait another month go get the PSU and the card at once? :ohwell:
Thanks in advance guys

I think it will be fine. Watts seem okay, might wanna make sure it has enough amps on the 12v rail though.

This is the info on their website. Are the amps enough?

I think you're good to go and buy your new HD5850 with that amperage, but that's just my humble opinion.

i dont know if that should be a great idea to use a 450 :x my best advice is to get a 500watt or 600watt psu with the right volts and rails. it should work beter then useally then a 450watt, basicly when ure wanto clock it higher, u need alittle higher then the 450watt, well ure owner off an 5850, and there are allot off advices that ppl are giving :x hope it should help. btw higher then 660watt isnt needit 750 is alittle to much for the electricity, and it gives allittle to much bills :x .<well i should say gl>

wait the month and get a new PSU too, a 500+ watt Corsair for example would be a good choice.

Why not just get the PSU 1st, at least gives you something to play with to ease the itch and get the 5850 next month ;)

Your GPS-450A will be fine for a 5850, as long as you distribute your components properly across the 12v rails. The 5850 won't need the full 18a that each of your 12v rails provides.

I would find it very hard to believe that that 450W has 36 Amps of "continous" output to offer across those 2 rails, not even at Peak performance, my personal opinion and advice would be not to risk it, however if you really are impatient, make sure every component is running at stock, drop any hard drives, opticals and fans that you dont need for a month and give it a try.

Edit: As an example, the Corsair 450W VX (a very good PSU) has just the single rail, it is rated at 33A.... I'll leave you to decide the rest :)

It doesn't. If you take the 120W @ 3.3V and 5V you end up with 330W @ 12V and that comes to 27.5A.

Every manufacturer recommends 500W power supply for 5850, but that didn't stop one Finnish forum person to say 400W is good for 5850 :shadedshu Recommender was supposedly running quad + 5850 crossfired on a 450W.. Edit: whoops, he said Q9550 + 5850 CF took 450W from socket, not a 450W PSU, but PSU really isn't the place to skimp out, unless you want crashes and instability.

This. 5850 might drop price too June, well at least that's what I'm hoping for :) (wants one!)

Or just get the 5850 and if the PSU brakes it doesn't matter, as you will get new anyways soon :p

The thing is the rated wattage is of all of the voltages combined, so even if you have a Corsair you can't run 5850CF on a 450W.
So the point still remains that he better get a new PSU.

To the best of my knowledge, he is not looking to run Crossfire, just one 5850.

Also to the best of my knowledge, that Chieftec gives you 33a (400w) total 12v power, and each 12v rail, while rated at 18a, is flexible so as to allow up to around 20a IIRC. I don't have a source for this that I can find at the moment, and if anyone knows better please feel free to post info/correct me if you know I'm mistaken.

At any rate I would of course recommend upgrading the PSU when possible.

With capacitor decay, you might be getting only 80% of your 450w number (or even less!). Ever hear the saying "better safe than sorry?" Well in this case, better safe than fuck up your expensive new $300 graphics card. Get a new PSU.

As for a new PSU I would recommend the GX series from Cooler Master, they pack a nice punch and are quite cheap :)

For the new PSU, the EarthWatts 650W from Antec or the TX750 from Corsair are good bang/buck in the high quality PSUs
