Another Q6600 query...

So, the basic story for me is- I've been running my box (stock non-overclocked Q6600/Stock Intel fan & sink) for some time now pretty much hassle free, playing games and running a lot of graphics applications. However, I recently got stuck into some heavy video work and have had the computer resetting itself after all four of my cores have been taxed at full load for a little while. I haven't seen any other evidence the issue is power supply related, so I thought I'd look into my core temps.

RealTemp's readouts are a bit confusing to me. Idle (5% or so) the average is between 45C-55C. Under load, things shoot up to more than 90C pretty quickly. I also have a red LOG writtem for my first core... but I'm not completely clear on what that means.

Any thoughts?

Means it's overheating and is throttling to avoid damage.

sounds like your Q6600 is overheating probable because of the stock heatsink if you have any TIM i would reapply it, and see what happens to your temps i don't get past 54C at 3GHz

Thanks guys. I'm all out of thermal paste (TIM?), so I guess I'll be off to the shops tomorrow. Any recommendations on a decent fan/sink to pick up? I'm not after something crazy- quieter is better.

Yeah, but doesn't the stock HSF already come with some sort of TIM already applied?

i like my Xiggy S1283 with a crossbow. and yes TIM= thermal interface material

@ Dyno And yes it does come with it but sounds like its not doing the job

It does, but... I was under the impression if I changed the fan I'd need to apply some new paste. Correct me if I'm wrong- I'm no expert

ya once removed you need to reapply. if you dont youll get air bubbles uneven spread hair sand all sorts of junk thats not supposed to be their. id get a small tower cooler or something. if you dont OC and its a work PC i wouldnt get a xigmatek super omfg. Honestly you have to take what we say here with a grain of salt. The fact is you dont need it. something like this would be fine.

Actually, is that cooler suited to the Q6600? It doesn't seem to be... unless I'm reading things wrong.

A lot of these coolers aren't available to me locally. I have the Hyper TX3, and a bunch from Noctua.

OCZ Vendetta (either version 1 or 2) works wonders with a Q6600. And they are dirt cheap. IMHO one of the best values in aftermarket heatsinks on the market.

Hmmm, I can't find any of them near me. I have found a CNPS9500, so that might do if I don't manage to scrounge one up.

xigmatek S1283/S1284 or TRUE 120 are good options for Q6600's

i'm not a fan of the zalman coolers, they take up more space for less cooling power, IMO.

I have pm'd the scary (very clam-like) man. At the moment the Noctua NH-U12P is looking nice. I don't know how loud it is, but it looks like a really solid cooler, and cool is possibly worth the extra cash.
