I'm just wondering where to place my fan... as I only have one and I want to overclock, not sure whether to place it on NB or SB

Thanks :)

Out of those 2..... most always the NB will get hotter than the SB so there is your answer! :)

mmm thanks :D

is it possible that i could overclock without cooling either of them and just leave the heatsinks fanless?

yes of course, depending on the board, you may be able to go all the way without specific cooling or you may find yourself a little limited by temps, just keep touching while clocking!

depends on the FSB you intend to run on the board and the voltage you feed to your NB.

You'll notice on LGA775 the memory controller is located on the north bridge so it handles a lot of traffic.

On the low budget boards, they are usually all passive, on the higher end boards they are heat piped or fan'd even.

At the very least, replace the tim, and use judgment if your going to run it passive.

The SB should have no problem running passive, unless you have a ton of drives connected to it in RAID.
That is your ICH9.

So, in essence, keeping your NB cool would potentially increase your OC potential on the CPU or RAM front?

yes and no...

it will get hot as your over 400fsb.

it wont get that hot if your under 300fsb.

And keeping the NB Cold... doesnt help, its just not letting it overheat.

i have placed a TEC on the NB b4, without any real benefits.

my work pc mobo is gigabyte g31-s2 and i overclock pantium D cpu from 3ghz to 4.5ghz using 1.55V and only +0.3 over NB stock voltage and i use stock cooling, room temp always under 30c and cpu temp with loading programs and WCG under 70 sure it will be hot under prime 95 but i don't have something use cpu like that, i use three 9cm fans, front-side-back.

Keeping the Glue Logic Cool is a must for high end equipment, along with the Voltage Regulation for the CPU and Ram, along with keeping the CPU and Ram cool themselves.

(As Mussels said), aim at the hotest part - this will be your NB/back of the GPU area of your mobo.

It can make a difference(as Tatty said), depending on mobo. Some NB get very hot and will become unstable at moderate FSB.
