Looking for a new Video Card

I was looking at getting a newer video card. I have a Dell Vostro 220 computer its an e7300 Dual Core 2.69 GHZ and 2 GB of Ram. I am currently using a 8600GT with a 410W APC power supply. I have been looking at either then 5570 or 5670 which would both better perform than the card I currently use. I haven't bought a card yet since I'm not sure which one to get yet. Plus since Nvidia hasn't come out yet with its budget Direct X11 capable cards all the ATI cards are being sold for ridiculous prices.

I don't want to spend $100 on a 5670. You would think since these ATI cards are already 6 Months Old by now you could find one for $70-75. Maybe find a 5570 for $50. I know they had a XFX 5570 for $40 including rebates last month but wasn't looking at the time. I noticed on Newegg you can get a Powercolor 5550 DDR3 with a $20 rebate for only $45 but the 5550 performs at about the same level as the 8600GT. I don't think I would get huge improvement with that card.

I want to get Starcraft 2 and currently play Halo so having a super powerful memory card isn't a problem. I want a better video card than my 8600GT so my computer could handle more powerful games. I also though a better video card could help since I edit HD Videos. My 8600GT video card still works fine but I'm just looking for something better.

My own personal rule when it comes to buying a GPU is to go by the second number.
The higher the second number the better.

As a general rule I would never suggest anything with the second number under 6 in the Radeons and never under 4 with the nVidias 2xx and up.

in case DX11 isn't a must (not many games make much use of it yet anyways).. have you considered a HD 4850 or a GTS 250 ? Really great performers in that pricerange, Ati STREAM and Nvidia CUDA is supported by their respective cards so if your video editing software supports any of em you might get a performance boost. :toast:

Agreed a 4850 at the prices they are right now are a steal.... the encroach on 5600 territory; but only lack DX11 and have 2x the amount of shaders and a higher bus interface than a 5600.

Newegg currently has a 9800GT on sale for $50 after rebates. That is by far your best buy.

Kazow. A 9800GT for fifty bucks is definitely a winner--it'll be a hefty upgrade from an 8600GT...and it's CHEAP! Even by my standards.

what size/resolution monitor are you using?

I have an ASUS widescreen monitor and the model is VH236H. The monitor is a 23 inch monitor and supports up to 1920x1080 resolution. I'm looking for a better video card and was thinking of getting a Direct X11 capable card. I don't know when Nvida is releasing its budget direct X11 cards so I wouldn't know when should fall on the ATI cards. I know my 8600GT runs around 47w and the 5670 runs about 61w. If I got the 5570 which runs at 43w I would be getting more efficient video card. I have also noticed that you can get a 4670 at a discounted price.

5670 will NOT run DX11 games, there no point of "upgrading" like this, especially you using 1080p.

Get at least a HD4770+ (HD4850, HD5750, HD5770, GTS250)

How many amps on the 12v rail do you have on that 410W? If its around 30A, youll be fine with up to an 5850/GTX460.

Yeah it sort of pisses me off considering I bought mine when it was first released.
Really didn't hold their value but in saying that it is a good thing for people looking for a gaming card.

So you're buying this mostly for SC2 right? According to this you should need a 4770 or equivalent with your monitor. Though I think Nvidia runs better for some reason, so that $50 9800gt would be a pretty good option.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/starcraft-ii-wings-of-liberty-gpu-graphics-performance/8
I wouldn't get a 9800GT because its 105 watts and it might be too powerful for my 410 watt power supply. The 5770 is also about 105 watts so I figured that might not work in my computer. Plus I'm not sure if one of these more powerful cards would fit. The 5670 seems to be about the same size as my 8600GT and 5570 would be a little smaller.

I was looking into 5570, 5670 and even 5750. The 5570 increases the pixel shaders from 4300 to 5200 so I would be getting about 20% increase compared to my 8600GT. The memory bandwidth would go from about 22,000 to 28,000 GB. If I were to get the 5670 the memory bandwidth would go up to around 63,000 GB close to 3X the bandwidth of my 8600GT. The 5750 would be around 70,000 GB. I also though about getting the 5750 but it seems like a rip off compared to the 5770 because many sellers sell them for about the same price. I even looked at the 4670 since on ebay they can be had for around $30-40 which is less than 1/2 price it costs for a 5670.

IMO, 5670 would be a PERFECT fit. Just a hair under performance than a 9800GT and doesn't require a PSU power connection. Wouldn't have to replace the current power supply. :)

EDIT:

Next best option you already named and that is a 5750.

I would either go with a HD5670 or no higher then a HD5750, if it was me I would try to go for the HD5750 for that extra performance:toast: they only use around 89W and hopefully your PSU could handle that, but need to know the amps on that PSU as well:)

The Power Supply is an APC 410 watt and 12 amps. I know those requirements AMD puts on the memory cards go a little overboard so if they say at 450 watt power supply is required to run the 5750 is probably incorrect. I could probably even run a 5770 on my 410 watt power supply but I don't think I would try it. I don't really want to spend $100 on a video card that's I'm currently waiting till I get something like the 5670 at deep discount. If I could get one for $70 without rebates that would be great but so far no one is doing that. I was looking at the 5750 and 5770 because I saw some auctions where the 5750 or 5770 have sold for under $100. Just a couple of days ago for example on ebay there was a new 5750 that sold for $75 and with shipping would have only been $99.

EVGA 512-P3-1153-TR is a good choice .
I'm not looking for a 9800GTX but they have them currently as one of the weekly specials at Fry's Electronics. You can a 512MB PNY 9800GTX its regularly $100 but they are currently offering a $50 rebate so its like your getting the card for $50.

That would be the easy way to go but a 9800GTX runs at around 150watts which is 3x the power as my current 8600GT card I'm using. My card runs at about 47 watts and the 9800GTX runs at about 150watts. $50 is a good price for the 9800GTX but I don't know if my 410 watt power supply could handle it.

NVidia are scheduled to release their GTX 450 card, probably with 192MBit Bus and 768MB of Ram at the end of August, this card is pitched at the low, low>mid sector so will be fairly cheap and will easily out perform an 8600GT and of course give you DX11, if you dont want to wait, with the res you have, I personally would not go below a HD5750 for DX11 (not much point at getting a DX11 card that cannot play some DX11 games at 19XX) or that 9800GTX/HD4850 mentioned earlier for DX10.

Bare in mind that on say Metro 2033 (DX11) at 19XX resolution with just fairly decent settings the game can almost bring an overclocked HD 5850 to it's knees.

Are they going to be releasing GTX 440 and 430? It seemed like they were going to be releasing the GTX 450, 440, and 430 around June but they ended up postponing the release of those cards to a later date. Is the 450 suppose to compete with the 5750 or 5770? Will be it be $150? I'm waiting till prices fall down or something new comes out. I don't want to spend more than $80-100 on a video card so right now most such as the 5670 and 5770 are too expensive. I understand the 5750 and 5770 are already 9 months old so they can be had for cheap on Ebay. They had a Sapphire 5750 sell today on ebay for $71.57 which is a pretty good deal.
