AMD 64 3000+ capping X1900GT?

I have a amd 64 3000+ with a x1900GT with 1gig ram. My CS:Source running at 1280x1024 with almost everything on high would run around 30-35 FPS average, often dipping down below 20. I've seen benchmarks with similiar hardware that run a minimum of 70-80 fps. Since if I turn off AA and AF, I get around the same FPS, I was wondering if it's my CPU thats capping the potential of the video card.

Thanks in advance.

I doubt it would bottleneck it that much, full system specs?

Well.... it can bottleneck, but not THAT much. My Athlon 64 3000+@2.4GHZ handled my X1800GTO and X1800XT with ease, I noticed a 300 pt increase on 3dmark05 with my 3800+@2.6GHZ.

Specs:
Asus A8N-E Mobo
AMD 64 3000+ @ stock
2 x 512 Kingston HyperX Ram 3200
ATI X1900 GT @ stock
200 gig SATA 2 Samsung Spinpoint
LG DVDRW

Well the low FPS is not only occuring in CS Source, I'm also seeing the same thing in other games like COD2, Oblivion, NWN2. It always runs less than the similiar benchmarks. But CS Source is where the problem is really prominent.

What are you getting in 3dmark05? That will give me a good baseline to compare to.

Also could you download this program-
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

And take screenshots of the CPU, Mainboard, and Memory tabs. Also, what power supply do you have?

Hmm.. I don't know the system requirements for that card, but I think that PSU is too weak to handle the card.

Anyhow, I think the CPU is bottlenecking a bit at least. You can always try to OC some and see if something happens.

hey

I have the same cpu and you can overclock the sillyness out of the venice cores. I have mine running at 2.1ghz for over a year. I think your ram is quality if it is then get that FSB up to like 233mhz. And see if that is helping.

I've heard people running a 7900GTO on this PSU. But if the PSU is not enough power, does the vid card slow down or not work at all?

no it's not holding you back at all

if you were getting 80fps, then getting a new cpu would give you 100+fps, but that doesn't actually matter

if anything, you are losing 1-2fps, which is nothing

The X1900GT needs 450W and 25A+ on the +12v rail. Underpowering it will result in low performance and will eventually knacker it.

Well I did a test and I think I know what may be the cause of it. I used my secondary windows to do a fresh install of drivers for my Mobo (Nforce4) and the video card. My fps for CS almost doubled from that, with stress test averaging 106fps (before was around 65).
Because I upgraded from a 6600GT to this X1900GT, I think something about not cleaning up the residual drivers from Geforce may have caused this. Is there a good step by step of uninstalling the GEforce drivers and using Driver Cleaner so that nothing is left behind?

As to the PSU, are there any monitors that can tell me whether the video card is not getting enough power or voltage from the PSU?

Hmm I dont see anything wrong with anything so far besides maybe the power supply, when you get lag in games, does it stutter?

Also do you have another graphics card you could test? If you have the money, just get a new PSU.

Well if its the PSU, I shouldn't have such a huge jump of FPS from one windows installation to another.

Did you getting it working fine in another windows installation?

I have a 3000+ and an X1900GT....I'm seeing a slight bottleneck, but not bad.

Ya it improved quite abit.

Well if you havent, boot into safe mode and run drivercleaner to remove Nvidia drivers. If there is something causing a conflict, that may solve it.

:edit:

Didnt see your post earlier, I think we posted at the same time. I would uninstall all your chipset and video drivers, then boot into safe mode and then remove them all with driver cleaner. Also run the Cab cleaner...

Cab cleaner should be run once correct? Not once for each driver I want to remove?
