Is selling a GTX480 so you can get two GTX460s worth it?

My friend just got a GTX480. He watched some stupid video about GTX460s in SLI beating his 480, now he wants to take his 480 back to the store and pick up two 460s.

I tried telling him he will not get a performance increase like he thinks hes going to get. but he just keeps saying "nooo its ok dude"

This is driving me f&^ing crazy.

if he overclocks his 480 he can match GTX460 SLi stock, however the 460SLi combo can OC to be even faster again of course.

does he overclock his 480 at all? also tell him theres are dual GPU issues he will completely avoid with his beastly GTX480.

I'm with hat on this one, tell him to save a few $$ and grab another 480, they are pretty much in a league of their own.

well if hes gaming under 2560x1600 he may see marginal increases from all the stupid videos i watched, but personally i dont see the point, unless just dicking around with crap is fun (which it is) is not 480 good enough for 1900 x 1200? if i had that much power id be opting for triple screens or a 32" 2560 x 1600

i dunno if he can return it for the same price he bought it seems like a win to me, free dickin with new crap, and got your monies back, maybe he'll return the 460's too and pick up some 6870's who knows, so much crap to dick with

IMO if he will not pay an extra dollar for this change + he is an overclocker, he can get those GTX 460s (MSI Cyclone or Gigabyte) and push them easily to 850 core (Personally i will not try to overclock a GTX 480). If it's not the case so better keep the GTX 480.

i guess easily lol. 850 is a very common max where a good portion top out, but i've seen a lot of reviews where they didn't get that high. I'd say 800 is alot more probable.

Either way, 800 or 850 they'd still outdo a GTX 480 in the supported games. Also aren't nvidia good about taht now? have decent SLI for vast amount of games.

I don't think the performance gain justifies the loss of upgrade headroom in the future. I mean... keep the 480 and stalk the prices as they drop over the next couple of years. Buy another 480 later on and drool over the performance.

Why fill two slots up with lesser cards with similar performance?

If he already has the 480, there is no point, however in my eyes, If your buying new to upgrade, only choice at the minute is the 460s for price vs performance
